Ty Austin- the day we found out he was a he i looked at the u/s and said,"his name is going to be Ty" and it just was... Austin is my husbands mn and birthmom asked us to use a part of our name in the baby's name, so we just had to wait to see if it was a boy or girl!

When I was a little girl I used to watch the tv show Eight is Enough (anyone remember that?). The youngest son was named Nicholas and I thought he was the cutest thing ever. So I told myself that if I ever had a son, his name would be Nicholas (and no nicknames either- Nicholas on 8 is Enough was called Nicholas and that's what I prefer my DS to be called). When we found out N was a boy, I suggested the name to DH and he agreed. We know a few people with kids named Nicholas, but that didn't sway our decision. His middle name is James- after my dad.
Baby girl's name will be Ava Rose
Ava= Name I have loved for a very long time and was very happy when DH agreed (he thinks we are naming her after Ava Gardner, hey whatever gets him to agree)
Rose= MIL name. She passed away in 2005.

as pp said we used the jewish tradition of using the first letter of the name of the person we were honoring.
our kids kind of have two sets of names, their english and their hebrew. i actually just wanted them to have hebrew names but mh was adamantly against this. our kids are the first people in his family to be born in america and he wanted them to have "american" names.
marlo is named after my paternal grandfather and her middle name janey is after a bruce springsteen song (janey don't you lose heart). her hebrew name is miriam after my grandpa.
theo is named after mh's uncle and his middle name mak were my maternal grandfather's initials. his hebrew name is tamir mordechai, also after mh's uncle and my poppy.
My mom pretty much named DD, although she passed away a year before DD was born. She loved the name and jokingly said that she wanted naming rights to my baby because she has always wanted to use this name. I didn't care for it and laughed at her (I told her that DH didn't even get naming rights). However, she became sick suddenly and required emergency surgery. She was in a coma at that point, but I told her that if she pulled through, I would use the name. She did pull through, although she passed away a few hours later.
So that became our future DD's first name, and then we used my mom's name for the middle name. When we found out I was pregnant, I secretly wanted a girl just so that I could use the name. It's actually why we ended up finding out the sex (we had always said we wouldn't) and I think everyone cried when we told them just because of the name thing.
The funny thing is, I have never liked this name. It's way too common for me. But now I absolutely love it. It totally fits DD and I feel like she has a connection with my mom because of it.
First, my father, who passed away 3 years ago, was Clement William. He hated his name and I know he would have been disappointed if we named our son Clement. But we loved Clement as a middle name. We were certain that it would be DS's middle name before he was born.
Second and related, my grandmother, who I never met, loved the name William. It was her father's name and she had wanted to name my dad William, but my grandfather wanted Clement and he won. She had hoped my dad would go by William, but the nickname that was popular for his generation (Bill) just didn't go with his last name.
Third, we were told at our 20w u/s that we were having a girl. Like any parent who finds out what they are having ahead of time, I spent the following days convincing DH and myself that what we were having (a girl) was the best (!!). We spent a lot of time talking about how girls are great older sibs - maternal and protective - and how it was a great way to start a family. So much time that it was a shock when we found out 2 weeks later that the u/s tech had been wrong and DS was a boy. Getting used to the fact that we didn't have a daughter, but a son took a little while, but on our babymoon we had a baby name book. I noticed William means "ardent protector." Given how much importance I had put on being a good older sibling, the name really really spoke to me.
Reed vanRyan....We took forever picking out a boy's name. I found it sooo hard. I really liked alot of names that DH didn't. He loved the name Seamus which I didn't like. We liked Hunter, then our friends used Hunter. We liked Liam and then found out it was the number one name around here. DH is very into music, and he was looking in one of his music books and just throwing names out at me...He came upon Lou Reed....Lou is DH's best friend but we didn't want to necessarily name our son after him directly...Reed just sounded good. van is the first part of my last name...and Ryan is BILs middle name. We just liked how vanRyan sounded.
Funny thing was...we took Reed out with us for breakfast when he was 5 days old and the little boy sitting next to us was Reed! Crazy!! They live in our neighbourhood.
Penny Emmeline....When we were having Reed we didn't know if we were having a boy or a girl..we liked Sadie or Penny for a girl. We told everyone we were using Sadie but secretly if she was a girl, we were going to use Penny. I have an Aunt Penny who is my other mother. She was fighting (and won) cancer while I was pregnant. Emmeline is the name of one of Tommy's distant cousins. She operates a museum dedicated to their relative who was a famous giant. We just liked the name.
I know I'm chiming in late, but here's ours... DH and I got married when SS was in kindergarten. He immediately started asking for a brother. It didn't go as easy as we hoped, and by the time we moved on to adoption and got matched, SS was in 4th grade. One day we were all eating breakfast and SS said "when we get our baby, and it's a boy, we are naming him Luke Skywalker" I laughed it off, but DH said he thought that was a great name. Lo and behold, we got matched with a boy and DH & SS wore me down until I agreed to Luke. We met in the middle with Lucas. (DH points out that since George Lucas is responsible for Star Wars, that's no big deal) Michael is DH's middle name and my only brothers name. So, Lucas Michael it is.
Moved to Domestic Adoption 9/09
Matched 10/09
Sweet little Luke was born 12/9/09!
DH and I both loved Claire (Hayden Pantierre's character on Hero's) and we both really like Rachel McAdams- and she has had several roles where her character's name is Claire (wedding crashers and time travelers wife) so we were really liking Claire- I think it's classic, not trendy. I also think it looks great on a wedding invitation or on a name plate, and it sounds cute for a little girl or professional for an adult. Anne is DH's mom's name- so that was easy.
Our Journey from two to three!
3 IUI's, 2 IVF's, decided to move to foster/adopt.
12/24/2009 Baby C born, 2/1/2010 placed with us,
5/17/2011 Adoption final- we are finally a forever family!
Sooooo late to this post...but I'll add our name story:
I have loved the name Ethan ever since I met a HOT boy named Ethan freshman year of college (always comes back to hot boys, right?). I have told my DH for years that that was my favorite boy name and he always vetoed it. DH and I have completely different name styles. So, I went through the whole baby name book, all 1,000,000 pages of it, and wrote down every name that I would even consider using for my son. I had a list of about 30 names. I gave him my list and told him he could choose one from that list. He narrowed it down to 2, Ethan and Caleb. When I saw that Ethan was on there, that was it.
Middle name: James after my father. If my parents had a boy, they would have used James as a first name. It's also my Dads middle name. I wanted to honor them and it sounds great with Ethan.
