I know this has been done before, but I love hearing the stories about how names were chosen.
Charles Ferdinand - Charles was my grandfather's name. I am really close to my grandmother and knew she would be so touched if we used his name. Ferdinand is FIL's name.
Annaleigh Lucy - Joe heard a song years ago called "Annaleigh" and ever since he heard it he wanted a daughter named Annaleigh. I wasn't sold on it at first, but it grew on me and I'm glad we chose it. Lucy is Joe's grandmother's name.
Lily Kevynn - Lily has always been my favorite girl name. I knew I had to use it if I ever had a girl. Kevynn is after a good friend of mine and Joe's named Kevin. He died in 2003 in a car accident and we wanted to use his name for one of our children. I really wanted to use FIL's name as a middle name too though, and since we only had one boy Lily got Kevin's name.
Re: s/o Baby Names - Why did you choose yours?
Owen Carlos- Owen means desire born. Carlos is DH's paternal grandfathers first name (he passed the year before we were married)
Ethan Joseph- Ethan means strength. Joseph is my maternal grandfathers middle name.
ETA: We chose vowels because all our names start with vowels.
The funny thing is Owen looks just like my maternal grandfather.
I am a runner, knitter, scientist, DE-IVF veteran, and stage III colon cancer survivor.
Gregory - We chose this as our boys name because we loved it. I had a good friend growing up with this name. He was an amazing person. Once we had our son, we knew we could never name a future living child this name because it was "his." He also kind of looked like a Gregory (to us).
Gwendolyn Jeanne - We chose Gwen to stay with the "G" names and because it is unique. I was hoping there would not be 5 Gwen's in school with her in the future. Jeanne was my grandma's name who I was incredibly close to. She was like a parent to me and so wonderful. I'm happy I will get to tell Gwen all about her Grandma Jeanne.
Lyla Mae - "Lyla" is from the TV show Friday Night Lights - not so special but we both liked the name. "Mae" is my grandmother's middle name.
Samuel Jack - "Samuel" we both liked it - it grew on me as I spent endless hours doing historical research on 17th century England for my Thesis (spent many hours reading The Diary of Samuel Pepys). "Jack" is FIL's middle name.
So we have a cheesey TV show and one is from historical research.. weird, huh?
Jacob Peter was named after Adam's grandfather. In the Jewish naming tradition, you take the first letter of the name of someone you would like to honor. Adam's grandfather's name was actually Jacob, but he went by Jack. Adam didn't even know that his grandfather's full name was Jacob until after our Jacob was born.
Peter is just a name that I really liked and thought it sounded good with Jacob.
We have a pretty jacked up last name - long and very German sounding. We needed to find a nice, traditional name to pair with it. Thank God Adam's grandfather's name wasn't Xavier! I would have had a hard time finding another "X" name!
Garrison was my husband's Grandmother's maiden name (and his middle name). I just think it is such a strong and beautiful name. I think it sounds stuffy or pretentious for a boy but is perfect for G. Elaine was my favorite aunt who fought breast cancer for 20 years and passed away about a year before I conceived.
Katen is a Dutch name to honor my side of the family since I carry DH's last name.
Ana is... the only name we could agree on?? lol
Preston Perry - I always loved the name Preston but it took me almost my entire pregnancy to get DH to go with Preston. Perry is my oldest brothers name! He was killed in car accident 9 years ago (he died November 14th, my kids were born November 1st 7 years later and I found I was having twins on his actually birthday). I knew after he died I wanted to name a child after him.
Jordana Kathleen - DH wanted Jordan and I didn't want that for a girl because I wanted a "girly" name. We fought a lot about girls names. About 2 weeks after I told my family i was pregnant with twins (i waited to almost 20weeks to tell pretty much anyone because i repeat m/c) I asked my mom and sisters to come to my u/s. We were throwing girls names around and my mom mentioned the actress Jordana Brewter (fast and furious) and how she liked the name. I said that is it! I told DH and he was happy because it was a form of Jordan. Kathleen is my grandmother's name. She was sweetest person you could ever meet, she past away when I was 18.
Brady Robert - I just really liked the name Brady and found out it was my family name after we picked it. We went to fair and they were selling snow man family christmas stuff that was personalized. I wanted one so badly but we didn't decide yet. I told DH i wanted one and he said pick the baby's name! I said Brady!!! Now Robert is my mom's fathers name who died when she was 2 when he was hit by a drunk driver xmas eve. My mother is Robin (named after him). I almost did Brady Roe (which is my moms maiden name)
Vivian Ellen gives DD the same initials as DH.
Vivian is one of 2 names we could agree on. Ellen is a family name going back generations in my side.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

Our tradition is to name for the deceased and use the first letter. So, here's the long explanation of my poor little girl's long name.
When I married Glenn, we knew that our first child's first name would be for his dad, Allan. So, that's where Alana comes from. Her first jewish name is Alitza, which, in both hebrew and polish means joy. It's unusual for a name to have the same meaning in both hebrew and polish and, since our egg donor is polish, it just felt like the perfect name!
In the time we were trying to have a baby, we lost both my grandmother and a very special uncle, and we felt that we needed to name for both of them and, not knowing if we would have another child (which is what is happening), we decided to use them both and give her 3 names.
Her 2nd name is Anna, which was my grandmother's name after she came to the US. Her given name is Chana, which is a jewish name and is my daughter's middle name in hebrew.
Her 3rd name is Aaryn. My uncle's name was also Allen (just a different spelling) as Glenn's father. We struggled with a 3rd A name. His hebrew name was Aharon, which is hebrew for Aaron. So, we changed the spelling to Aaryn, and gave her the hebrew name Aharona, which is the female of Aharon.
English - Alana Anna Aaryn
Hebrew - Alitza Chana Aharona
Another reason it makes me sad that we can't have anymore children is because there are some other family members that I would really like to name for and, sadly, these people will now never have anyone named for them......
Alexander Donald Steven Lastname - Alexander "Alex" because it was name we both agreed on long before we were married. We wanted classic but workable for all ages and one that would look good on his future firms letterhead! Donald after much much adored and much missed grandfather as well as DH father. Steven after my dad.
It does crack me up to say his full name as it takes so long!
I really like old names. Growing up, I always wanted to use my Grandmother's name (Isabella). But, in the past few years it has gotten pretty popular. Which I am not usually a fan of.
When we were picking names for Cora, I looked up the SS# index from 1910 - the year that our house was said to be built (not 100% sure). So, I looked at that list and then compared the ones that I liked to the current lists. You know just to be sure it was not a high #.
With both girls, I had a list of names and basically my husband picked one that he liked from the list.
So, we thought Cora Evelyn sounded good.
We did the same thing (from the same year) with Elsie. Elsie will probably NEVER be a popular name. The last time it was on the top 1000 list was in 1911, but even then, it was in the 900's.
Then we had to pick a middle name. And, i said - "I think it needs something short lke June" June is not something I EVER thought of. It just came to me. And Frank agreed that it sounded good.
If we had a boy, it was going to be Frank III (not my fav)
My Blog
Reagan Estella--My DH really loves the name Reagan. I like it because it is unique but not odd. Estella is in memory of my late grandmother who I love and miss dearly.
The new baby will be Madilynn Elizabeth. We love the name Madilynn and chose the spelling because DH's first name is actually Lynn although he doesn't go by it (he is a third and it is an old, southern male name). So the spelling is after him. Elizabeth is my middle name and I always thought it was very pretty. (I also think it is special and interesting that Elizabeth in the Bible suffered from infertility yet she was eventually able to conceive.)
Carter Ryan-We both liked the name Carter a lot and he is somewhat named after the drummer of the Dave Matthews Band (don't laugh) We met through a Dave Matthews fan site and are huge fans so that's our ode to DMB , haha.
Dylan Jacob-only other boys name we could agree on!
Jacob David...Is named after my mother Jenifer who passed away almost 9 yrs ago. In Jewish tradition you use the first letter of the person who is deceased. I had a REALLY hard finding a "J" boys name that I liked. Jacob wasn't my first choice but once he came out..He really looked is a Jacob/Jake in my opion..
David..is my grandfather (on Mom's side who is also deceased) and uncle..I love, love, love the name David..
Our philosophy on naming our kids was to give them their own first name and a family middle name. Henry is just a name we both loved from the start...it's the only name we ever seriously considfered for him. His middle name is Lloyd, which was the first name of DH's paternal grandfather.
Our little girl will either have the middle name Ann, which is my mom's and grandmother's middle name, or Margaret, which is my mom's first name.
She was either going to be Lucy or Maya. DH loved/loves Maya but I felt like it was getting too popular. I just think Lucy is a sweet, classic name and when she was born and I told DH he could pick, he went with Lucy.
Her middle name is Katherine after a close family friend who was like a second mom to me.
Katherine Emily - My grandmas name is Mary Catherine and she took care of me when I was growing up. I've always loved the name Emily and MILs name is Emma so it gave Dh something
Karly Elizabeth - Dhs middle name is Carlton and we had hoped for a boy to carry on the family name and as a little girl I wanted to change my name to Elizabeth and my mom wouldn't let me so I gave the name to my daughter lol
Okay I feel like the oddball here, no rhyme or reason I just liked the way her name sounded and its not too common or too unusual. I have an unusal name and never really liked having it. So that's how we decided on Meredith Kate.
Elizabeth Kathryn -- Elizabeth was the only girl name on my list that DH immediately liked. I also liked the name's meaning and the Biblical story of Elizabeth, who was childless until old age. Kathryn (spelled that way) is my grandma's name and also chosen in memory of DH's mom, Kathleen.
I love David, too! I always thought I would have a son named David, as it was my grandfather's name. I still wish I could have done it, but, I'm at least comforted knowing that I have a fairly distant cousin who was named for him. I would hate if any of my grandparents didn't have anyone named for them.
Oliver Robin - Oliver is a reference to the twins I lost. For a few different reasons I've always thought of them as olives. It's kind of a long, drawn out story, but anyway the name Oliver is a nod to them. Robin came from Robinho, who is a Brazilian soccer player. For some reason my DH started calling Ollie Robinho when I was very newly pregnant and it totally stuck. We called him Robinho through the entire pregnancy (didn't pick a name until he was 4 days old) so when he was born I thought we should include his "first" name somehow.
Funny - both names are in reference to pregnancy. I never realized that before.

My Parenting Blog: Letters From Your Mama
DS - Alastair [DH's mom's maiden] - DH is from Scotland (moved to US ten yrs ago) so we wanted a strong, Scottish name. I think DH brought it up and we instantly agreed and never looked back. Oddly, a couple months ago I realized that it was the first name that I ever loved, I heard it in a last name in a movie at age 10. Kind of strange that I didn't remember that until he was four. His middle name is DH's mom's maiden. She died unexpectedly a month before our wedding.
DD - Natalie Kate - We both just loved the name Natalie. I've had a couple very close friends named Natalie and I always loved their name. Kate is after both of DH's grandmothers and his aunt, who is a nun. His grandmothers were both Catherines and his aunt was Kathleen. We wanted to incorporate everyone so we went with Kate.
I love hearing these stories! Here's mine...
Jake Parker - Jake is named for Grandma Jean...both my paternal and DH's paternal grandmothers were Jean. (Side note: get this...both of our maternal grandmothers are Rose - weird, huh?!?)
I have to admit though, that I also have LOVED the name Jake for over 20 years, as it's the name of my teen movie heart throb, Jake Ryan, (Sixteen Candles) and I fully expected to name my son Jake for a long time. Thank goodness DH approved!
Parker - the "P" comes from my grandfather Paul who died literally one week before the DIUI that conceived Jake.
My daughter is named Amalia after my mom. Her middle name is my maiden name after my father.
My son is named Simon - also after my mom. It was her maiden name. Simon's middle name is also my maiden name.
IVF #1-4=BFN IVF #5=BFP! U/S on 5/3 revealed TWINS!
Andrew's fulll name is Robert Andrew ***** III. We call him by his middle name so he can have his own name and I like A names
Kathryn Angelina
Kathryn was the only name that we both loved and we also both loved the nn Katie and Kate. Plus Kathryn was my paternal grandmother's name who passed away when I was 14. Angelina is my maternal grandmother's name whom I am very close with. She is our only granparent still living and we wanted to honor her. Kathryn was seriously the only name for either a girl or boy that we liked so I have no idea what we will do when (hopefully when) we have another one.
Griffin Ellison: We just liked Griffin a lot... it was different but not weird. Ellison is my grandfather's name and i always wanted to use it as a middle name.
Grayson Mayer: after we picked Griffin's name we realized we needed to do all G names b/c DH and I are both G's --- Grayson was always a favorite G name of ours- and Mayer is part of my maiden name.
Gibson Matthew: Gibson = another G name we liked a lot... goes with the surname "theme" we have going (not on purpose)... it's strong, not common and not strange. Matthew = DH's dad and brother's names (they have both passed) and is also 2 of our nephew's names.
I love this post
Liam Francis: We really wanted to use an Irish name and we both liked Liam right away. Francis is DH's name
Finnian Dillon: We wanted to keep with Irish names and I have always loved Finn and we considered it for DS#1. It felt right to use it this time. Dillon is a family surname.
Agnes Keena: Agnes was my grandmothers name. She was my most favorite person in the world and passed away in 2006. We struggled a lot with its old ladyness but decided we loved it and did not care. We called her Nessa. I had a small amount of comfort when she died that the 2 Agneses were together. Keena is a family surname as well.
Jack Matthew- Jack is after my FIL, his name was John but everyone called him Jack. He passed away 2 months before I conceived Jack so it felt only right to name Jack after him. Matthew means gift from God and Jack was certainly a gift from God.
Our girls name honors my family so I hope that I can have a daughter and give them that gift.

After 4yrs, 5 IUI's, 2 IVF's, 2 FET's, PGD, and 5 losses our little miracle is finally here!
Charles Lawrence- Charles is DH's grandfather's name. Lawrence was my grandfather's middle name and my other grandfather was Lorenze. DH's P Grandfather passed on the last name.
Alexandra Claire- We liked the nickname Lexie but I wasn't too big on Alexis because it didn't give her many options growing up and I felt it was too trendy compared to Charles. Claire just kinda stuck and with our last name beginning with an E her initials are ACE. DH and I met because of volleyball and he was All American in college so I thought this was fitting. We also think it's a cool nickname for when she's older and probably playing sports.
Married 8.13.2005, M/C 12/8/06- 5 weeks, M/C 2/27/07- 7 weeks, M/C w/ D&C 8/10/09-6.5 weeks *Charles Lawrence born 5/2/08 @ 3:14am, 7lb 8oz, 20.5 inches. Clomid, Crinone and baby aspirin. *Alexandra Claire born 9/14/10 @ 9:52am 6lb 14oz, 20.5 inches. Femara, Crinone and baby aspirin.
I wanted Hebrew names because our last name is VERY un-Jewish sounding and wanted my heritage reflected.
Noah and Talia - no special meaning or story, just names we both liked and had liked for years, and they were Hebrew. Their middle names are both "Doodle" because that's what we called them during (and after) the pregnancy.
Toodle's name (which I prefer not to post here but most of you know) - also Hebrew, I liked that it was pretty uncommon but a name most people have heard and sounded Jewish and not just "biblical". I also like that it sounds strong and historical. His middle name is Michael, which is DH's middle name and also was DH's grandfather's (who he was very close to and died shortly after we were married) name.
Stella Lee...we like classic names and Stella was one we both agreed on and that you don't hear very often. Course, since she's been born I've been hearing it more. Oh well! Her mn is Lee after my deceased father. His mn was Lee too.
Hadley Jo...we really like names that end in "y" and it was a name neither of us had heard before. It also seems to be popping up more these days. Jo is after both of our mom's middle names.
