I took it to mean would you leave your kid alone or just leave your kid with other people (as in take your child to a birthday party and leave them there alone even though there are other adults and kids) that had a pit. I said no.
only a moron would leave their kid alone (no adult) with a dog that is not theirs. She didn't say anything to mean she would drop her kid off. She said take.
I'm not sure where you got the idea that she was dropping the kid off?
I personally think the jury should still be out on this. Or maybe I'm just kinda in the middle.
One thing I will say-it irks me when you see these kinds of statements in the same paragraph or post "Oh, I don't discriminate against breeds, etc" and "Chis bite and can be vicious! la la la"
Yeah, you don't breed-hate or anything. Let's remember that Chihuahuas are defensive because they are tiny anyway. If someone could squash you in a flat second you might be a little temperamental as well.
I think people just get defensive because they have the particular breed and just won't even acknowledge the idea that maybe that animal isn't so safe to have with their children.
I personally, would never own an animal I'm not comfortable leaving alone with my child. I seriously just don't get that.
I just want to clarify that my chihuahuas comments were a joke. I'm not defensive. I don't own any animals.
I personally don't see myself leaving my baby alone with ANY animal.
I am a huge dog lover, we have a boston terrier and a lab that are literally like my other children in many ways, but I am wary of pitbulls. I know it is not the breed, it is the people who train them to act that way and yada yada yada-- but I still don't trust them. I have heard too many stories about family pitbulls that turned suddenly on a young child or had a violent outburst or whatever. If I went to a house with a pitbull or ANY large dog, I would want the owner to crate the dog or put it out.
I am wary of pitbulls because of their reputation, but I have a good friend who has two. I wouldn't avoid going to her house because of the pitbulls. I would just be extra vigilant with DS. One of the dogs is a rescue dog who was abused, I think that makes him more prone to violent outbursts. I feel much more comfortable with her other pit who was raised by her since he was a puppy.
I do have to say that I kind of give the side eye to her when she refuses to put the dogs in another room or behind a gate when there are guests over. She knows that people are more fearful of pitbulls and I really think I good hostess would put them away for the comfort of her guests. I have no problem sectioning off my labs, and they have a good reputation. Some people are just afraid of dogs. This is especially true when there are children involved. One of my friends had a three year old daughter who was petrified of dogs (all dogs), the little girl clung to her mom the entire time she was at the house. They ended up leaving because the hostess would not put her dogs behind a gate.
No, I would not. I do understand that there are great pitbulls who have been raised in great homes, but genetically they can snap. I have worked in a dog-related occupation, and even though I've seen some okay pits, they always tended to be the most trouble makers.
As a PP stated, yes chihuahuas can be vicious, too. HOWEVER chihuahuas do not have the jaw strength as a pitbull, and little dogs are more likely to bite and release, where as with a pitbull, they are more likely to clamp on and hold on.
I will NOT let my child around a pitbull.
This!
Pitbulls have been bred specifically to fight. It's not like that's a myth. I wouldn't take DS around any dog that I didn't know well, but never around a pitbull.
Yes. Our best friends have a pit and he is the sweetest thing! The first time he met DD he army crawled over to her and licked her.
Pit bulls are not as horrible as people make them seem. It's all about how you train/treat your dog. Any dog can be violent. From the statistics that I've read there are more small dog attacks on children than pit bulls.
