Not the chemicals, really. Just... going and buying disposables? I have never bought disposables. We used the ones the hospital gave us until the night we got home from the hospital. We used the same ones on an 11 hour road trip with a diaper cover over it because I didn't trust the disposable. I am planning a vacation with no access to a washer/dryer EIGHT MONTHS FROM NOW and I am still a little worried about using them.
I just think it is funny people always come over here and are so confused about CD and I'm sitting here confused about disposables. Well, not so much confused as worried about constant blowouts on vacation.
Re: Are you scared of disposables?
I LOATHE disposables. Seriously. With a passion. This past weekend I started diaper laundy 1 hour before we were leaving for the weekend. What I was thinking I have no idea. Anyways, i bought a pack of sposies that I knew fit him since he spent a week in the hospital over thanksgiving. $9 for 36 diapers! That's crazy. We had constant poop blowouts and leaks. I had to buy him a new outfit while we were out because he already went through his spare outfit.
I just spent $150 on flips to use on our move across country and I'm so happy about that. Atleast I can use them again and/or sell them. The thought of him having a blowout in a sposie in his carseat in the middle of nowhere scares me more then spending $150 on flips. haha.
This is my other fear! Since he has barely been in disposables, I don't know if he will get a rash or not. I don't want a rash when we are out of the country.

Newborn disposables are SO tiny and cute. After seeing a CD on my NB baby's butt, I have a hard time imagining how a disposable can keep the poop in.
I hate disposables. I am still attempting a stash picture, so once again I put DS in a disposable today. He broke out within 30 minutes of it being put on him. So, I busted out the prefolds that we haven't been using. The smell of them makes me sick now.
I am really trying to convince my friend to cd but so far she is not on board. She says the thought of washing poop grosses her out. The thought of all those sposies in the landfill grosses me out.
I was getting 180 disposables for around $18 on Amazon and that lasts about a month. We really had no problems with them; I just hated making so much garbage!
I love my new cloth diapers but I really don't mind disposables either.
A PW hanging bag would probably hold all of that. Unless you were flying, and then I wouldn't want to be the gal that randomly checked your bag!
To the OP, I'm not sure but I think you could probably get flats and handwash them in a sink. If you dunked the poo in the toilet and then santized the sink after (you could use sanitizing wipes if you need to be able to pack them) it would probably be okay. They are supposed to wash and dry very easily. There is some info on them on GMD.
ETA: You could also use flushable liners.

haha...we will be flying with cloth and I would LOVE for someone to stop me to check my luggage and start going through my wet bags...:)
I don't hate them, but my years as a preschool teacher changing only disposables was one of the many reasons I wanted to CD DS. Unfortunately, we have yet to come up with a full-proof nighttime routine (8 months in...so annoying!) that it's easier to keep him in sposies at night. I hate the idea that I CD part-time (we usually travel with sposies too, because our trips are usually only a few days and one box of diapers will last). So...not scared of them, just hate that I feel dependent on them at night. I feel almost shameful when I buy them.
My New Year's resolution is to work up the courage to try keeping him in cloth at night....any diaper suggestions would be awesome!
If I had to I would buy earth's best or 7th generation, it narrows it down considerably... less overwhelming! lol but yes i would have no clue if I just walked into a store and had to buy a pack of diapers!
ETA: we went on a 8day road trip from CT to FL in August and I CDed the entire trip. I did two washes. We didn't have any problems. I have enough for 4-5 days worth so if I was going camping or something for 7 days I would up my stash. Plus most campgrounds have washer/dryers so you could probably do a load or two if need be.
