Cloth Diapering

Are you scared of disposables?

Not the chemicals, really. Just... going and buying disposables? I have never bought disposables. We used the ones the hospital gave us until the night we got home from the hospital. We used the same ones on an 11 hour road trip with a diaper cover over it because I didn't trust the disposable. I am planning a vacation with no access to a washer/dryer EIGHT MONTHS FROM NOW and I am still a little worried about using them.

I just think it is funny people always come over here and are so confused about CD and I'm sitting here confused about disposables. Well, not so much confused as worried about constant blowouts on vacation.

Re: Are you scared of disposables?

  • LOL!  When we flew across the country when DD was 3 months old I bought diapers at Target out there because I still had some left over from the hospital.  I didn't realize there were so many options.  I got scared and just bought the Target brand.  They worked fine, we didn't have any blowouts.  I just hate throwing them away when she pees right away.  Every time I changed her diaper it was like throwing away quarters!

I LOATHE disposables.  Seriously.  With a passion.  This past weekend I started diaper laundy 1 hour before we were leaving for the weekend.  What I was thinking I have no idea.  Anyways, i bought a pack of sposies that I knew fit him since he spent a week in the hospital over thanksgiving.  $9 for 36 diapers!  That's crazy.  We had constant poop blowouts and leaks.  I had to buy him a new outfit while we were out because he already went through his spare outfit.

I just spent $150 on flips to use on our move across country and I'm so happy about that.  Atleast I can use them again and/or sell them.  The thought of him having a blowout in a sposie in his carseat in the middle of nowhere scares me more then spending $150 on flips.  haha.

  • This may be flame worthy over here but I have to admit I was a little excited that someone bought a pack of the (disposable) newborn diapers I registered for.  I registered for one pack of newborns, but also put we were cloth diapering and that I didnt need many. Plus I wanted people to know that if they really wanted to buy me disposables that I wanted Huggies pure and natural. But anyway, newborn disposables are still somewhat cute to me and since I am done with my nb stash, I was a little excited tonight.

  • I'm trying to figure out how we can keep DD in cloth on our 4 day trip 3 months from now.  :oD  In part because she gets a horrible rash when she's in sposies for long.  :(

This is my other fear! Since he has barely been in disposables, I don't know if he will get a rash or not. I don't want a rash when we are out of the country.

  • Nope not scared of them but I'm not trying to CD on a week long camping trip. DS doesn't get a reaction from them, just the fact that they get thrown away makes me cringe. It feels so wasteful to use them.

Newborn disposables are SO tiny and cute. After seeing a CD on my NB baby's butt, I have a hard time imagining how a disposable can keep the poop in.

  • We traveled in November with our cloth but that was on a 6 hour road trip and I had access to a washing machine.  We flew to Florida in December and although I had access to a washing machine, it was $50 to check an extra suitcase and I didn't want to pay $50 each way to pack our cloth.  We had a major blowout on the flight home in a disposable and the plane had no changing table in the bathroom.  The flight attendant wouldn't let me change him in their area on the floor and told me I had to change him on my lap.  Yep- changed a disposable blow out on my lap.  I was so angry and will never use disposables to travel again!!!
  • I hate disposables. I am still attempting a stash picture, so once again I put DS in a disposable today. He broke out within 30 minutes of it being put on him. So, I busted out the prefolds that we haven't been using. The smell of them makes me sick now.

I am really trying to convince my friend to cd but so far she is not on board. She says the thought of washing poop grosses her out. The thought of all those sposies in the landfill grosses me out.

  • I was getting 180 disposables for around $18 on Amazon and that lasts about a month.  We really had no problems with them; I just hated making so much garbage!

I love my new cloth diapers but I really don't mind disposables either.

  • Nope. DH still turns for them first, and we use them on trips and sometimes overnight. I've only had one blowout.
  • I know what works for DD - Pampers Sensitive and Huggies Pure & Natural.  They are the only types that don't cause Ainsley to get a major rash.  I'm not afraid of them, but we frequently had blowouts so I'm actually more afraid of the mess.  Kind of ironic given the fact that most people are afraid of the mess CDs create.

  • Disposables freak me out. All those chemicals on my DD's butt... no thanks! I won't use them. My friend just gave up on CDing after a month or so and is back in sposies. The smell of even a pee diaper in sposies makes me want to barf.

A PW hanging bag would probably hold all of that.  Unless you were flying, and then I wouldn't want to be the gal that randomly checked your bag!

  • To the OP, I'm not sure but I think you could probably get flats and handwash them in a sink. If you dunked the poo in the toilet and then santized the sink after (you could use sanitizing wipes if you need to be able to pack them) it would probably be okay. They are supposed to wash and dry very easily. There is some info on them on GMD.

ETA: You could also use flushable liners.

  • Not scared, but I do hate them! Since we switched to cloth when dd was 2 months old, I havent used a sposie on her. We even went on a 3 days vacation across the state and I lugged along a million cds! LOL If I needed to go on a longer vacation, Id probably order the sposie flips from cottonbabies and just handwash covers as needed. I reaaaaaaally hate sposies! :P

  • I don't hate them, but my years as a preschool teacher changing only disposables was one of the many reasons I wanted to CD DS. Unfortunately, we have yet to come up with a full-proof nighttime routine (8 months in...so annoying!) that it's easier to keep him in sposies at night. I hate the idea that I CD part-time (we usually travel with sposies too, because our trips are usually only a few days and one box of diapers will last). So...not scared of them, just hate that I feel dependent on them at night. I feel almost shameful when I buy them. Embarrassed

My New Year's resolution is to work up the courage to try keeping him in cloth at night....any diaper suggestions would be awesome!

  • If I had to I would buy earth's best or 7th generation, it narrows it down considerably... less overwhelming! lol but yes i would have no clue if I just walked into a store and had to buy a pack of diapers!

ETA: we went on a 8day road trip from CT to FL in August and I CDed the entire trip. I did two washes. We didn't have any problems. I have enough for 4-5 days worth so if I was going camping or something for 7 days I would up my stash. Plus most campgrounds have washer/dryers so you could probably do a load or two if need be.
