Update on DD's Surgical Consult (re: fused labia) - LONG

Well, ended up not being a consult at all. They did the procedure right then. The surgeon said it was so quick, that unless we saw a reason to wait...

They applied a local anesthetic, waited 30 min to make sure it took effect, and just did it. No lasers, no anesthesia.

I was really hoping for the laser procedure, because my pedi had led me to believe that it had a far less rate of recurrence than any others, but the surgeon said the rate of recurrence is the same no matter the procedure.

So we decided to forego the lasers, as that would also require the risk of general anesthesia.

Definitely more traumatic for me than for DD.  Crying They gave us a new Rx cream to apply for the next 2 weeks, plus an Rx anesthetic cream to help her thru the next few days, and the name of an OTC cream that we will use daily pretty much from now on to hopefully prevent recurrence.

She's healing very nicely, but every diaper change is still a fight. She's just so sick & tired of people messing around "down there". Poor girl.

One thing we noticed immediately is the change in her urination. Beginning the day after the procedure, she started holding her pee for 3-4 hours, then letting it all out at once, resulting in peeing thru her diaper & clothes. PITB to go thru the wardrobe changes, but we're taking this as a really good sign that once her 2 week healing time is over, we will be able to move forward with PTing at full speed.
Assuming we can convince her too. She stopped going on the potty at all about 6 weeks ago because "Potty hurt me". Sad So if we can convince her to try after she's all healed up, maybe we can have some good success there.

So that's the update. Thanks to everyone who expressed concern / support!

  • Poor thing! :-( I am glad that they were able to get the procedure done so quickly and it is SUCH a blessing she didnt have to undergo general anesthesia. I've come to realize how resilient kids are-- I always have a harder time than Nicholas whenever he has any procedure done lol Sending T&P your way that this will be a permanent solution and that she will heal quickly! Keep us updated!
