Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Let's say you put your LO in their crib

They're fed, changed, and have played for a long time. They have no immediate needs, except that they want your attention. You, on the other hand, want a shower. You get undressed, turn the shower on, look at the monitor, and see LO standing up in their crib, but not crying. You know that they can't get down on their own, but if you go in there they will start screaming. Do you:

a) Go in there anyway, lay them down, and let them scream while you shower (even though they will most likely stand up again the second you leave)

b) Let them keep standing up and take your shower anyways

c) Go in and get them because you don't want to deal with the screaming and ignore your shower until they finally decide to nap or YH gets home.

  • If I can't wait until SO gets home to shower, I'd go with option B.

  • i vote b.  did it this morning

  • B. If they're not crying, then why not shower?

  • If he isn't crying when I start, I proceed with my shower. If he starts crying mid-shower and I know that he is just whining to get out, I continue my shower.  If he starts screaming like something is truly wrong, I jump out.

  • I would let him stand there.  He will sit down if he wants to, and if he gets grouchy that I am not there and cries himself to sleep that fine!

  • b.

When my DS learned to stand but hadn't quite figured out sitting yet, I just let him figure it out during naps.

He was so loud at nighttime that I really had to attend to it after 5-10 minutes or so or it would wake everyone up, but for naps I figured he could use the time to figure it out.

He isn't much of a cryer, but he would yell.  I'd get in the shower specifically so I didn't have to listen to the yelling (no monitor, but it was still loud in our small house).  He'd crash within 20 minutes or so and I definitely think it helped get the "must stand up" thing out of his system and helped him learn to sit back down because after just a few nights he wasn't yelling all night any more.

  • Definitely B. It won't hurt LO to stand or even cry for a few minutes.

    B. If they're not crying and then why not shower?

Mine banged his face off of the crib rails when I was in the room a few weeks ago.  There was blood and crying (both of us)...he was fine after a little ice, but he wasn't crying when it happened.  He was happily standing up in his crib and slipped and hit his face on the rail.  :(

Will he sit in the crib and play with toys?  I have a few toys that really hold DS's interest, so if I put those in the crib he doesn't even notice that I'm in the shower or that he isn't standing up, etc.

  • I just did B. I'm afraid that he's going to hit his face, which is why I don't really know what to do. I guess he'll have to figure out how to sit down at some point. Thank goodness for video monitors.

I'm sorry that happened to your LO.  Eli has pretty good balance. When he does trip, he's really good about falling on his butt or putting his hands out. Your scenario never crossed my mind. I guess it just depends on your child.

I'm not being snarky, I'm just really trying to understand your concern. Can your LO not sit down from standing, on his own?

  • if I really need to shower, then B.

if I can wait, then C, so I can take a longer and stress-free shower. aka 10min instead of 5.

  • C, my shower can wait until his nap. I'd rather hang out with him while he's awake.

It does!  It never crossed my mind before it happened, actually.

    But I have a wild child.  ;)

He can everywhere but the crib for some reason. And the whole reason for the poll is because he takes very sporadic naps (I've tried sleep training, etc., he's just not a napper). I just never know when I'm going to be able to get my shower in, and it's much harder now that he's mobile.

  • option b - happened this morning actually - he woke up before I was ready for the day ...

this exactly, DD takes a bit of time hanging out in her crib before she falls asleep anyway.  luckily she's very independent and is pretty good at entertaining herself.  Sometimes I think she gets upset when I interrupt her playing with the rail guards in the crib.
