LO has not slept today for more than 20 minutes at a time

Since 7:30AM, my LO has not slept for more than 20 minutes at a time.  Well he did sleep an hour at 10:30 until 11:30, but that was about it.  I don't know what his problem is!  I've swaddled him, unswaddled, put him in his swing, in the bouncer, in the car seat, in his snuggle nest.  He only falls asleep in my arms, and when I lay him down he'll wake right back up.  I can tell he's tired but he fights it off so hard.  He isn't hungry because I've been feeding him his normal every 2 hours, and I change his diaper every time I feed him.  I even switched formulas because I thought he might have an upset stomach, and I gave him gas drops.  I've tried to lay him down and let him cry it out until he tired himself out, but that didn't work.  I just don't know what's wrong.

...Gotta go.  He's crying again....

  • Keep him in your arms for longer and if you want, you can let him lie near to you. Maybe he is just having some issues being away from you today. Once you are out of the 20 min period, you can try putting him down.

Also you can shower him, supposedly the warm water makes them sleeeeeeepppy.

  • My little guy went through phases like that too. Ditto what the PP said, hold him 20 minutes after he falls asleep and then try putting him down.

He is way too young to be left to cry it out, though. If he's crying he needs something, and that just might be you today. Don't worry this will pass, but he's not old enough to cry and then calm himself down, he needs your help.

Good luck, I hope you get some rest soon!

  • the obvious answer here is hold him and let him sleep.  not hard.

  • Try swaddling and then sleep next to him or him on you.  Or swaddle & swing.  That almost always works for me (but mine's older). Mine will almost always fall asleep in the carrier when I go for a walk.  If really desperate, you could go for a drive.

  • Thanks everyone.  I ended up doing what you suggested, holding him and letting him sleep for a while, at least 30 minutes, then setting him down.  It's been working.  Like some of you said, I think he just needed me today.  He's been sleeping in the swing for the last week and a half and maybe he just got tired of it and wanted to be in my arms instead.

Yep that is probably the case!  You don't have to worry about spoiling a baby this small.  I think I held DS1 for most of the first 2 months of his life!

  • I was in the same boat from 1am-11am. Then, my mom got here and she passed out in her grandma's arms for 3 hours, ate, then slept in my BFF's arms for another 2 hours. Everyone's gone now and she's fussing again. I'm starting to feel like I'm the problem...
