favorite VERY LIGHT reading?

I have a long distance friend who is on strict bed rest and am thinking of sending her a care package of books and magazines...any suggestions? I don't want anything too heavy or sad or emotional...if you have a favorite, please post!

Re: favorite VERY LIGHT reading?

  • I really liked the Jessica Darling series.  It's 5 books and follows a girl from highschool until mid to late 20's.  Very cute!

  • Not what you asked, but I enjoyed crosswords/sudoku/word searches while on bed rest. It got very boring. I really got to the point where I couldn't focus on anything for long, so I'd do a little at a time. I also read a lot of magazines. Light reading is a good choice over long novels. It's very thoughtful to do this for her!
  • Jenn Lancaster - My Fair Lazy, Bitter is the New Black, Such a Pretty Fat. She is so funny.

  • Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff (Christ's childhood pal) is the funniest thong I've ever read.
  • I love the Shopaholic series.  Totally brainless entertainment.

Ditto!!!!!!!!!!!!  Christopher Moore is a god.

I usually do short story collections, or crossword puzzles when I can't just dig in for a novel.  That way I can put it down and not be halfway through something.

  • Not for reading, but I got a people magazine book of puzzles when I was on bedrest. It had a bunch of different puzzles, sudoku, find the differences, crosswords, etc.
  • I agree that the Jen Lancaster books are hilarious. I just finished all 3 Chelsea Handler books in less than a week and they may have been even funnier than Jen Lancasters books.

I also read Tori Spellings books and they were mindless and hard to put down :)

  • Awesome! Thanks everyone! These are some great ideas...I never would have thought of crossword puzzles or Sudoku. The books sound good too. Thanks!!

  • Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris.
  • I love David Sedaris, Me Talk Pretty One Day and Barrel Fever are both hilarious. If you also like him, I'd also recommend Shalom Auslander.  They're very similar, and where Sedaris is self-deprecating about being gay, Auslander is self-deprecating about growing up Jewish.  Makes for hilarious, but sometimes poignant, story-telling.  I'm just finishing Beware of God, and it's as funny as his memoirs, Foreskins Lament.  Although he's Jewish, his upbringing reminds me of my own strict and sometimes superstitious Catholic childhood, so even if you're not Jewish, it's easy to relate.
