husbands at doctors appt...

What's the norm on your husbands attending your OB appts? Do they attend every single one, or just the "major" ones?

My hubby is feeling a little guilty that he can't be at this one today, even though this isn't a "major" one. I told him it was no biggie and it doesn't really bother me, but he seems to feel pretty bad as he has attended all of them so far.

Re: husbands at doctors appt...

  • DH has come to every one so far. They are pretty boring and I can't ask questions with him there so I wish he would just come to the major ones.

  • My hub went to both the ultrasounds (and will go to anatomy) and the first appointment where we heard the heartbeat. I figure it'll stay that way, since my check-up appointments are an hour+ in the waiting room and less than 10 minutes with the doctor. He feels bad sometimes, but  since we have a home doppler, he can here the babe whenever he wants.

  • Okay, I'm totally lurking over here from July- but I just had to comment on you being in Fredericksburg. My husband and I live in Harper!

*I suppose I could weigh in on the question too... my husband can't get off of work for my appointment this week. He is sad about it, but there are so many throughout the pregnancy and they're so routine (urine, blood pressure, hb...) that it's okay if he can only make it to the "big" ones.

  • DH came to the first appt and the anatomy scan and that's it. So far all my other appointments have been quick 10 minute trips so it is just easier to go by myself before I head into work.

  • He went to the first u/s with me, my NT scan, and my anatomy scan.  He'll go to the one's where there's planned u/s involved...otherwise I don't need him to be there and take time off work.

  • My DH is only coming to the major ones -- 12-week to hear the heartbeat and the 20-week ultrasound.
  • he's been to all but one. He just so happens to be able to get off for them. For the monthly ones it's not a big deal but if it happens that way, cool. I'm sure he won't continue to make all of them though.
  • I've had a "prenatal class" and 2 appointments so far, and DH has gone to all of them.  He comes in the room with me, and I just feel better having him there.  He will be coming to all of my appointments, no matter how boring they are.  Luckily, he has a flexible job that allows this to happen.

  • Mine works 2nd shift and I make appointments in the morning. He prefers to go anyhow, but this makes it easier for him to go. I wouldnt mind if he missed the inbetween appointments but I do prefer him there for the big ones.
  • He has only really gone to the ones with a planned ultrasound.  If I have an unexpected appointment that I go to from work, he will go to those since we commute together, but his job doesn't really allow him flexiblity to go to all of them.

  • I feel bad about this. I went to my first couple of midwife appointments without DH thinking he'd be bored or not interested enough to take the time off work. He was pretty upset. I should have asked. Since then, he's been to everything with me. It's pretty sweet, actually. Luckily we both have relatively flexible work schedules, so we can take time off at the same time.
  • My DH has been going to every appointment so far. I had to have a emergency ultrasound at 9weeks because I was bleeding and we didn't know what to expect with having two previous miscarriage. He couldn't make it to the emergency ultrasound and was extremely upset about it!! My mother came along, just in case we wouldn't be able to see the heartbeat... Ever since that happen he said he wanted to come to every appointment. I am ok with him coming because I want him to be totally on board with what I want and what we are discussing. I sometimes have issues telling what happens... leaving out details or forgetting stuff... *ugh pregnancy brain*

  • Ha, I was just thinking about this today.  Tomorrow is my anatomy scan and of course my husband will be there, but I thought to myself at lunch that this will probably be the last one he'll go to for a while.  He has gone to all of my appointments except for the first initial pregnancy confirmation/bloodwork appointment.  All of them have been "major" since then:

    6 week- first ultrasound

    12 week- heartbeat

    16 week- optional gender ultrasound

    tomorrow- anatomy scan

I wonder if he'll want to continue to come to all of them?

  • DH has come to every one so far. I know as they got more often (and as he starts school again in a few weeks) it will be more difficult. I know he wants to come, but sometimes it is just too difficult.

  • Dh will just be going to the major ones.  He was at my first U/S and will go to the anatomy scan.  He'll probably go to one towards the end as well.
  • DH wanted to come to them all but I feel that it's useless for the ones that just include weight, bp check and urine check. We also work slightly different hours so I make my appt before I go to work which would make him lose time at work. It's more important that he be there for the u/s, important appts and of course when the baby is here.

  • My husband is a college instructor so as long as I make it for a time when he's not teaching, he doesn't have to take off work for them. He's gone to all of them so far, and I know he'll go to the next two - tomorrow we're meeting with a new midwife for the first time, and the next appt will be for the ultrasound. After that, he'll probably still go to most of them, but he's learning how boring the in-between ones are. Our last one I literally just got weighed, BP checked, heard heartbeat, and then we were done. I don't mind if he misses some of those routine ones, but so far he's been excited to go.

  • With our first he came to every appt. But, we were both full time college students so it was super easy to schedule the appts around our classes and part time jobs.

For the second and third, he hasn't been to one appt. He came to the first u/s, the NT scan and he'll be at the anatomy scan on Monday.

I want him to come at least once to meet my new OB, but if that doesn't happen I won't be upset. H & I work together so I know how hard it is to take off.

  • MH has planned to come to all of them, but has not been able to come to all because of work, etc. He has been to the major ones, and some of the not so major ones. I don't have a problem with him being there though, I have no issues about asking questions with him around, anything I ask my doctor he is probably already aware of.

WOW!!!  We live so close!!!!! What do you and your husband do in Harper? Will you be delivering at the FBG hospital or over in kerrville? We just moved here in June and we love it so far, don't know too many people yet...

  • Mine came to my first appointment to meet my OB (MH actually works with her husband) and then he came to my anatomy scan.  He does his own ultrasounds on me so those are like bonus appointments!  I don't think there is any need for him to come to my monthly OB visits since all they do is weigh me, pee in a cup, and listen to the HB.
  • dh has come to the ultrasound appointments and my first second gyn appointment (with doppler- so the first time we could hear the heartbeat).  he is not coming tomorrow - he just does not have it in his schedule to come to each one

  • DH has been there for each one, even when I tell him he doesn't have to if it's just a quick follow up. It's nice he makes time for me and baby =)

  • He hasn't come to any, aside from the anatomy scan last week. It just doesn't make sense for our situation, my dr's office is right near my place of work, so it would be silly for him to go out of his way to come.

  • I get really bad anxiety when I go into the doctors office so my husband goes to all of them with me. He helps me remember all of my questions and she is able to answer all of his questions!
  • DH has been at every single appointment. God bless his heart. I was very thankful for this during our previous pregnancy as we found out about our loss at a regular appointment with the midwife. He likes going and we talk quite openly so I'm not impeded from asking questions or anything while he's with me. If he had to miss my mom has offered to go with me if I need her to.
  • Mine has come to every appointment so far. He may miss some later, due to work but we are tying to make them so he can attend them all. Doctors have always made me nervous, so I bring him to any kind of appointment I have. LOL

We both work in Kerrville (he was born & raised there, I'm from Austin) and we just moved out to Harper in July. He does pest control and I do digital photo retouching and marketing for a company out of Austin.

I'm actually going to deliver at St. Lukes in SA- I couldn't seem to find a good CNM in Kerrville or Fredericksburg with hospital privileges.

    Where did you move from?

  • DH went to every one with DD and is on track for doing the same this time... WE are pregnant... not just my responsibility... plus, he likes it and it makes him feel involved... plus I love the support :)

  • My DH made it to my first u/s (emergency at 6 weeks) to see the heartbeat, he came to my 8 wk appt (hoping to hear the heartbeat - which we did!) and has not been to the others, but will be for the anatomy scan.  If we hadn't heard the HB at 8 wks he would have came to the next - it was something we wanted to experience together.  So I guess we go in the "major/big appts" category.  :)

  • DH went to the first appointment and the NT and Anatomy Ultrasounds.  Since most of my monthly appointments are peeing in a cup and hearing the heartbeat he skips those.  He told me if there was something big he wants to come but since he works more than an hour from home I leave him out of the routine ones.

  • Mine missed the first appointment and ultrasound. He would have liked to be there but had no vacation left and couldn't get out of work. He managed to get out for the NT scan but still hasn't heard the HB.

My DR has twice made comments about him not being there, one at the ultrasound and at my second appointment where I just peed in a cup and tried to listed to the HB, saying "Oh your DH didn't want to come today?" It really pissed me off. Why would you assume he's not there because he doesn't want to come? If she says it again I'm going to snap.

btw now that vacation has reset he's still not going to make every appointment. Only the important ones. We both would rather he save time off for when the baby is here!

  • DH's employer is waaaaaaay into "work-life balance," so he gets to use sick time to come to my OB appointments. He's been to every one and plans to go to them all. I like that he's there to take notes and remind me to ask questions. Since it's our first child and pregnancy, it seems like we always have new questions to ask at the appointments. I like having him there so I don't have to give a play-by-play later.

  • My husband only comes to the ultrasounds.

He's REALLY uncomfortable in doctors offices, so having him there and fidgeting isn't helpful. I report back fully to him after each one, and he's happy with that.

  • DH has been to every one so far, but I don't know if he'll go to our appt this Thursday.  There's no ultrasound, and he doesn't have any concerns or questions this go round whereas last time he did.

Although, I like having him at our appts so I hope he goes. Just b/c only last time the doctor asked a question about our next ultrasound, and I had no idea what she was talking about but DH did--she was asking if the genetics counselor's office was going to do it, or just get the results from them.  I had totally spaced that the GC's office offered that, but we declined and were just going to let the OB do it and send them results.  DH knew right away and was able to answer for me.  Pregmentia strikes again! lol

  • Only to the ultrasounds, which are done at a separate place. I brought him with me to the 16 wk appt, just so that he could meet the doctor.

  • MH has come to maybe 80% of my u/s and only one of my regular appointments.  I don't really feel the need for him to be there.  He can certainly come if he wants, but they are pretty boring and his job keeps him busy so he usually skips out.
