Poor little man. It's been four days and he seems very uncomfortable. He is EBF. So far we have tried a warm bath, tummy rubs, taking his temp rectally, bicycle legs. Any suggestions? I'm calling the doc first thing tomorrow.
We gave DS prune juice when he was a baby, warm it up and it worked really well. We formula feed and switched formulas when both kids got constipated, but that won't be helpful for you!
BF babies can go for longer without pooping. Breast milk is nutritionally complete with little waste, meaning the baby can use almost everything in breast milk. Make sure that your LO is still having at least 6 wet diapers a day. If he's not having enough this may indicate that he is dehydrated. If he's having pellet poop then he's def. constipated.
Call your Pedi and see what he/she recommends. Ours told us try an ounce of water (which we didn't do because she was still having plenty of wet diapers), and to get a infant suppository and cut it in half lengthwise. I didn't insert it all the way, just held the tip in for a little while, and lo and behold 30 min later we had a diaperfull.
LO is EBF and poops almost every time she BFs. But we have been in this situation twice and feeding her formula (enfamil newborn nursettes) usually does the trick for us lol.
My LO is constantly constipated! He's also EBF and we finally ended up giving him a suppository. My mom said she used to have to do that all the time with me so she explained to my H how to do it. He cuts it in half and inserts it in his rectum, holding it there until DS pushes it out and poop usually follows.
We mentioned it to our pedi at his 2 month appt. She said what other people have said, that EBF babies can often go 3-7 days without pooping. But if he's pushing and nothing is happening we should try either an ounce of water or a tablespoon of prune juice every day. Hopefully that should help soften it enough for him. We've been doing the water since Friday (it's great since I BF this gives DH a chance to give LO a bottle). He was pooping, but now hasn't gone in two days. I'm still giving it a couple more days before switching to the prune juice. HTH
We JUST went through the same thing and it's so tough to hear LO grunting and pushing with nothing but gas to come out. My LO is EBF too! Our Pedi said to try 1oz of prune or pear juice 2x a day for 2 days. She finally went yesterday, and actually had 4 in a row! The look of relief on her face afterward was priceless! Good luck with your LO!!

This is our experience as well. We tried the water and it did not help. The suppository however, worked just fine. I would definitely go that route. My LO was never actually constipated though. The poop that came out was always super soft BM poop and never hard. He just needed a little stimulation to go.
