Time to get out of infant carseat?

DS' infant car seat limits are 22 lbs for weight and 29 inches for height.  He was 19lbs and was 28 inches at his last dr appt about a month ago.  I was hoping to get him thru winter in the infant carseat so I didn't have to worry about getting him in/out of a convertible seat when I can just carry the infant seat.

He has a check up in a couple weeks so I will see what he weighs and how tall he is then but if he is 28 or 29 inches should I move him then or is he ok until he's actually over the limit?   I know his growth isn't as rapid now that he's a little older but still not sure how fast he would grow to 29 inches tall since he's only an inch away.

  • I'm not sure that you'll make it through the winter.  Growth is slower, but you're only talking about 1 inch.  They have spurts.  I guess I don't see the point in testing the manufacturer's limit.  But, I also stopped carrying her in the infant seat a while ago.  So for me, the convertible will actually be easier to get her in and out.

  • A limit is a limit, so I wouldn't go past 29". See what he is at his check-up, and be ready to move him into a convertible if he's 29" or higher.

  • The limit is more an estimate, since two kids could be the same height, but one could have a tall torso and the other have long legs. By the numbers, they could be the same height, but the long legged child could actually still fit in the seat. A seat is outgrown when the top of their head comes within 1" of the shell. If he's getting close to that, I'd get a convertible. If he's the long-legged body type, then I'd wait until his head comes within 1"

Yes  This is exactly right. The total height really doent matter except that they have to put *something* for a frame of reference for parents. As long as there is at least 1" of space between the top of your LO's head and the top of the hard plastic part of the seat, you're fine :)  Plenty of babies are leggy and might have an overall height of well over 30" but still be more than 1" from the top.

  • Thanks Emilie, I was hoping you would pop in on this one! :) I was thinking maybe that's what it was instead of the actual height of the baby.  I will take a look next time DS is in his carseat to see how close he is coming to the top of the carseat!

Yes  I'm late but I was just going to reply with this information exactly. Consider yourself lucky- my DS was 3-4 months when he hit the height limit and we had to switch to a convertible.
