how to keep DS out of garbage cans???

How do you guys keep your LOs out of the trashcans?  DS's new thing is pulling things out of there to play with, and then putting other things in (which aren't trash, like sippy cups, clean clothes, etc).  Any ideas?  The redirection and "no"s dont' seem to help :(

  • Our trash is in our pantry closet.   The handles are up too high for her to reach.

That, and even if she did get into the pantry, it's one of those stainless steel trash cans where you have to step on the foot pedal to open the lid.

Maybe try a garbage that has a cover like ours?

We have a garbage can with the step lid too, and he just lifts the lid and takes stuff out! I can't wait to see what others have to say...I'm curious too.

  • were having the same problem, we went out and bought a trash can with a locking lid. ours is made by Simple Human - got it from BBB

Is yours stainless steel?  Or plastic?   I can see an LO being able to lift a plastic one, but the one I have I can't even open without stepping on the pedal. It's heavy, and it seals itself pretty tight.

  • Omg.. I have this problem- except that he puts things in it!

His bink, my shoes, his toys, etc etc. I always have to check it before I throw the bag out to make sure nothing is in there! It's stainless steel and has a lid.. I'm thinkin' we're gonna need to put it out of his reach but I have no idea where!

  • Why don't you just get a trash can that will fit under your sink for the time being and put a childproof latch on the door so he can't get in?  It will most likely get filled up quicker/more often but it will probably be less of a pain in the a$$ in the long run.

Yep, it's a stainless steel one, the lid kind of sucks to the bag when it's shut, so I have no idea how he can keep getting it open. Maybe I birthed the Hulk or something.

  • Oh boy. We have a trash drawer that we put a lock on. The waste baskets are sitting on all of our toilets. It's not the best look but it's how to keep him out of the cans.
  • He gets in it every once in a while but we tell him no and that usually does the trick.  He knows better now.

  • We put them out of his reach.  Except the kitchen trash can, which is a big steel can and he can't get into it by himself.  When he picked up a bit of paper or something else that was trash, I held a trashcan open for him to put it in.  If he tried to take it back out, I told him, "Once it's in the trash, it's bye-bye."   And re-directed.

Now, he knows what the trash can is for, and we put them all back out.  He ignores them unless he has something to throw away (he likes to "blow" his nose on a tissue and then throw it away).

  • Bed Bath and Beyond sell garbage cans that lock, we have one of those

  • We bought this trash can.  Best investment ever.  It has saved me so much grief.  I was forever fishing stuff out of the trash.
