I'm just sayin... (vent)

.... if you dont have kids, much less a bf, PLEASE dont tell me how to raise my kids and what movies they should or should not watch!! UGH sorry, SIL is driving me crazy!! she litterally laughed at me for me saying I would not allow my kids to watch Harry Potter (which probably wont even be the big thing by that time). UGH she pisses me off SO much I want to scream and yell!! UGH

  • Things like that are such a personal decision, they are absolutely nobody else's business. I am not even watching Harry Potter myself because I don't think witch craft is something I want to put in front of my eyes. DD will certainly not be watching it either!

  • please tell me she did more than laugh. i laugh at stuff people say all the time. now if she pointed and laughed and said "omg you're such a loser mom!" i could see why you would be upset.
  • Ummm sorry, but unless it was for religious reasons I'd laugh at you too. If there's one thing I've learned it's never to say never when it comes to parenting. As a parent my choices are constantly evolving to truly suit my childrens personality and our  needs as a family.
  • I have to say I would laugh as well. Harry Potter is awesome. The new movies are not appropriate for young kids, it might scare them. But keeping it from them for some stupid reason like it promotes witchcraft, well that makes me shake my head and laugh at you.

I mean it is fine with me with you wanna let you kids watch bad movies that like that should NOT be out there for kids to see, that is your decision but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. and watching those are not pleasing to Him!! thank you. and for those that just flamed me.... PSCH! She can suck it. I totally have you beat...I've been made fun of for saying I won't let my kids watch Shrek...do I give a poo what anyone else thinks...nope!!! No child of mine is going to be asking me at 5 years old what it means to wear a "thong" and why does someone wear a thong. IMO if you want CHILDREN to watch your movie make it a CHILDRENS movie. Mature themes are not for my babies!! And when the time comes that I DO DECIDE my babies are mature enough for those movies they will be watching them with ME so that they can feel comfortable asking me questions that might come up.

oh they wont watch that either, I didnt even like it!

  • Yes it's a personal decision but when they go to school or hang out with friends they'll learn a lot more than they would from any movie.

  • Please pray for me.....evidently watching and allowing my children to watch Harry Potter makes me a "bad" Christian not to mention a bad parent. Oh, and my two year old watches Shrek ALL the time, so please pray for her soul also. I can always use all the prayers I can get. AND definitely pray for my eleven year old because he LOVES to read the Harry Potter series. I never could get him to read and here I was thanking J.K. Rowlings for writing something my child would actually read. Evidently, she's the DEVIL.

I agree with you on YOU are the parent, YOU let your children watch what you prefer, but statements like that kind of uncalled for. Especially the 2nd one. Not everyone has the same beliefs as you, no need to say that someone isn't "pleasing the lord" because they let their children watch one of those movies. Maybe their lord likes gingerbread men who wear thongs.

I, for one, won't allow my child to watch Veggie Tales.

LOL  I'm sorry but you are cracking me up!  Shrek is bad kids movie?   Really?  Wow...

I had a friend in high school...her dad is a pastor of a Christian church...well, he was pretty similar to you in your beliefs.  One of his daughters brought home I believe was one of the Batman movies on VHS (this was a long time ago) and he thought that movie was "bad" so he got out a hammer and he smashed it to pieces because he thought it was evil!  That's so NOT normal...

It's cool you are tight enough with God to know his opinion on Harry Potter. I wasn't going to flame you, but say to each his own, but I HATE the I'll pray for you and your evil ways attitude.  I'm Catholic, but also realistic- If we read the book- then yes, we'll see the movie.  Harry Potter, Narnia, etc all promote literacy and I will support them.  I am a much stronger proponent of teaching children values and providing them with the tools to uphold those values rather than keeping them in a bubble.

I teach in s public elementary school and I went to a Catholic school and I PROMISE your kids will be exposed to much worse the day they start preschool.

You're right. It is a personal decision for you to choose to not allow your child to watch that movie. You should also remember that is just as much someone's else right and decision to let their children watch these movies. (Shrek? You have a problem with Shrek? FFS) because from the sentiment of your statements, it seems that only YOUR decision is the correct one. Perhaps you should try to keep the damnation to a minimum.

    I'd have to totally agree.

You have the right to be frustrated with someone for giving you a hard time about your beliefs, but you are doing the same thing to others in this thred.

Personally I don't see the harm in the movies, but its not my choice.

I personally don't feel like my Lord minds if I or my children watch certain movies.  I think the person you are on the inside is what pleases Him more then what you watch on your television.

  • When I was a kid my very favorite movie in the world was The Worst Witch (which is totally where JK got the idea for Harry Potter) it's amazing I can get through the day without throwing out some sorcery.

I kid. But I agree with you that it's a personal parenting decision, so why are you telling us that might disagree that we need to be prayed for?

  • This thread is gonna give me a headache, but I'll bite.

OP- Speaking as a fellow Christian, you come across as very holier than thou and legalistic. That's what the hub-bub is all about. I doubt you meant to, but that really is how you come across.  This is a board full of people from all walks of life and faiths (or lack thereof).

If you feel convicted in your spirit that you don't want your children to watch certain things, that's great. I'm so glad you're taking responsibility for what your child sees.

But, on the same token, you need to remember that the Holy Spirit speaks to each individual.  I believe (and the Bible backs me up on this) that there are some issues that some Christians feel convicted on, and others don't, because those issues are a stumbling block for only certain Christians.

For example-- some Christians feel that God has told them not to send their children to public school.  So, if those Christians disobeyed that leading and sent their kids to public school, then they would be sinning.  However, another Christian might be led to send their kids to public school. In their case, they would be disobeying God if they didn't.

You feel that God has spoken to you about what movies you would let your children watch.  But whether or not your neighbor lets their kids? That's their business between them and God.

You don't want to be laughed at by your SIL, but on the same token, you can't knock other people for what they do with their kids. The way you worded some things on here came across like you were.

Jesus was MUCH harder on the judgemental, religious Pharisees than he ever was toward the crooked tax collectors and prostitutes. He saw that at least the tax collectors and prostitutes recognized that they weren't perfect, were repentant, and weren't worried about what their neighbor was doing.

I'm not saying you're like the Pharisees, I'm just telling you that that's how you come across on here.

  • I absolutely agree that its a personal decision what you and your family watch. However I am a Christian myself and apart of christianity is do not judge. I am in no position to judge you for the decisions you make just as you are not in any position to judge me for mine. She has just as much of a right to laugh in your face as you have the right to feel she is out of line for doing it. Who knows, she very well may be venting about how uptight you can be at this very moment.

And I completely agree with the Mom who said never say never b/c you have no idea what will come in the future and what will suit your family best at that time.

He does have a movie review website.......www.capalert.com

If you want to see some pretty wacky reviews...they're all on one site.

To the OP......it's fine that you don't want to let your children watch certain movies, but don't judge other people.

  • It's pretty annoying when anyone, mother or not, tells you what to do with your children or laughs at you for the parenting decisions you make.

But I did want to add to be realistic.  You can ban movies and books from your child, but LO isn't going to be with you 24/7 when she's older.  I'd rather watch the movie with her and explain to her what was being seen rather than have her friends talk to her about it.

  • I was kind of hoping that god had better things to do than condem me to he'll for watching a movie.
