first thank you to the ladies that agree and the ones that would laugh too, well I will be praying for you!!! and they are MY kids and my DH and I decide what they will and will not watch. and oh yea Shrek is another one they WONT be watching. I mean it is fine with me with you wanna let you kids watch bad movies that like that should NOT be out there for kids to see, that is your decision but as for me and my house we will serve the Lord. and watching those are not pleasing to Him!! thank you. and for those that just flamed me.... I pray the Lord is with you and your decisions!
My kids are gonna teach your kids all about sex and drugs and witchcraft. I will encourage it.
Telling someone you will pray for them in the context that you did was condesending and self-rightious, two traits that I'm pretty sure the Lord does not find appealing.

I agree that it's your kid, your decision on what they will or won't watch (at least at home - you'll never know for sure what they watch at friend's houses. But, like someone else said, never say never. I said I'd never do a bunch of things that I do now.
My question is, why is Harry Potter so evil, but something like Cinderella (or a ton of other fairy tales) or The Wizard of Oz, or Star Wars is fine? Don't they all have elements of witchcraft, even if it isn't called witchcraft? I ask my mom this, and she just blanks out and can only say "It's just different".
This thread is gonna give me a headache, but I'll bite.
OP- Speaking as a fellow Christian, you come across as very holier than thou and legalistic. That's what the hub-bub is all about. I doubt you meant to, but that really is how you come across. This is a board full of people from all walks of life and faiths (or lack thereof).
If you feel convicted in your spirit that you don't want your children to watch certain things, that's great. I'm so glad you're taking responsibility for what your child sees.
But, on the same token, you need to remember that the Holy Spirit speaks to each individual. I believe (and the Bible backs me up on this) that there are some issues that some Christians feel convicted on, and others don't, because those issues are a stumbling block for only certain Christians.
For example-- some Christians feel that God has told them not to send their children to public school. So, if those Christians disobeyed that leading and sent their kids to public school, then they would be sinning. However, another Christian might be led to send their kids to public school. In their case, they would be disobeying God if they didn't.
You feel that God has spoken to you about what movies you would let your children watch. But whether or not your neighbor lets their kids? That's their business between them and God.
You don't want to be laughed at by your SIL, but on the same token, you can't knock other people for what they do with their kids. The way you worded some things on here came across like you were.
Jesus was MUCH harder on the judgemental, religious Pharisees than he ever was toward the crooked tax collectors and prostitutes. He saw that at least the tax collectors and prostitutes recognized that they weren't perfect, were repentant, and weren't worried about what their neighbor was doing.
I'm not saying you're like the Pharisees, I'm just telling you that that's how you come across on here.
I was going to write a long response, but instead I'll just say ditto to all this.

Things like that are such a personal decision, they are absolutely nobody else's business. I am not even watching Harry Potter myself because I don't think witch craft is something I want to put in front of my eyes. DD will certainly not be watching it either!
I remember you from the August board and thought you were a nut then too. Really HP is witch craft?! Really come on. No child of mine is going to be asking me at 5 years old what it means to wear a "thong" and why does someone wear a thong. IMO if you want CHILDREN to watch your movie make it a CHILDRENS movie. Mature themes are not for my babies!! And when the time comes that I DO DECIDE my babies are mature enough for those movies they will be watching them with ME so that they can feel comfortable asking me questions that might come up.

I do. VPL is the work of Satan. I will pray for those of you who allow people who aren't your husband to see the line of your underwear elastic on your bottom. Poor satan-deceived women.

I'm Christian as well. I'm mormon. In the LDS religion, we aren't supposed to drink coffee, or engage in any activity that could become addictive. So pretty much all caffeine is out.
Some people see this as really crazy. Obviously Coffee isn't on the same level as drinking alcohol or doing drugs. But IMO, and in the opinion of the church I believe in, coffee and other caffeinated beverages should be avoided due to the addictive nature.
Do I think my friends who drink coffee are going to hell? Nope. Because their believes are not my believes. They will be held accountable for what they've been taught. I however, will be held accountable for the caffeinated beverages I so greatly enjoy.
I hope that comparison made sense.
Anyways. Please stop praying for me, I do a fine job praying for myself.
ETA. Also, I will not only allow HP in my home, but promote HP.
I think Harry Potter brings a bigger issue to the table with young children. In a round-about way, it's about racism. You have these two different "races" muggles, and witches/wizards. Some people of one race believe they are superior, and seek to destroy the other. A muggle holocaust if you will. It's about standing up for what you believe in, doing whats right, and the power of love, specifically of a parents love for their children.
I believe Harry Potter gives children their first glance into judgment, and how to tolerate others.
PSCH! She can suck it. I totally have you beat...I've been made fun of for saying I won't let my kids watch Shrek...do I give a poo what anyone else thinks...nope!!! Pinocchio does in the third Shrek movie. That's how they get his nose to grow so the gingerbread man can get to Shrek and Donkey to free them.
The gingerbread man couldn't reach so they needed Pinocchio's nose to grow so gingy could walk out the nose and unlock their shackles. Shrek said to say something like "I wear girl's underwear" so Pinocchio did and his nose didn't grow. Gingy pulled the thong out from under his pants and said "Pinocchio wears girls underwear". Pinocchio denied it enough times that his nose grew long enough to walk out and save Shrek.
Yep, I've officially watched the Shrek movies one too many times. Eh, maybe I'll do it again this weekend. And maybe I'll follow that up by a viewing of Van Helsing - you know... a movie centered around a Vatican plot to save Frankenstein from vampires and warewolves. I'd watch it tonight, but I like to watch Charmed after work.
OP, it is people like you who always have me thinking that if heaven only lets in people who "think" (yes, in quotes, for a good reason) like you......I would much rather be spending time in hell along with all the other fun-loving, creative, easygoing, imaginative, intelligent, accepting and open people, who, according to your opinion, would end up in hell with me. Me and my new heathen friends will watch Harry Potter marathons, in your honour.
What your children read and watch are up to you but I have to say if you don't like the Potter books and movies I'm pretty sure you aren't going to like most childrens chapter books because they are all about make believe and fantasy. As a side I have to say the Potter books and movies were lots of fun to read and watch and much tamer then the bible.
There are many things recorded in the bible that smack of witchcraft more than the HP movies. If you really think about it before clutching your pearls in horror, many of the things in the bible are very magical in aspect.

Honest question, OP. What are you going to do when LO wants to go to a friends house for a sleepover? Tell the parents not to put on Shrek, or at that time something similar (since Shrek probably wont be as popular then)? Pack veggie tales and URGE them to watch that instead? What about when LO's friends come to your place, what will you let them watch? You know, as your kids get older, they will probably end up exposed to all of those things anyway.

I'm not going to flame you (even though you've offended me, I don't believe in witchcraft and therefore see nothing evil in imagining), but I do want to offer some advice.
You are your own person and a mentally capable adult (assuming here) and are therefore the best person to make decisions for yourself. Your children are their own persons, but they are not mentally capable adults or even adolescents, and so you being their parent are the best person to make decisions for them on things that they are not old enough to grasp.
Now pay close attention here, one day they will be old enough to choose for themselves. They will be able to agree or disagree and you as a parent need to let them.
I grew up next to a girl whose parents were not very diffrent from you. She was not allowed to read Harry Potter (they weren't movies yet) and not allowed to watch The Little Mermaid. I didn't understand as I came from a religious household who didn't allow certain programs deemed inappropritate to be watched. Long story short, she rebelled and her parents didn't know how to let her make her own choices, so the harder they pushed, the harder she pushed back.
I'm not saying this WILL happen, but it's a likely result. Pick your battles, Harry Potter may be a tame compromise in the future.

I'm not saying this WILL happen, but it's a likely result. Pick your battles, Harry Potter may be a tame compromise in the future.
Forcing is not the same as accepting.
