3 month old eats every hour

My LO seems to want to eat every hour during the day. All my books say babies his age eat about every three hours.

It's not a growth spurt thing that only happens occasionally--this is all the time. He's in the 90th percentile for height and weight. This is my first baby so I don't know if this could be normal?

Re: 3 month old eats every hour

  • DD was eating about every 1.5 at that age. Eventually she spaced her feedings out more. She's also in the 80/90 percentiles for height and weight. Some babies are snackers...
DD was diagnosed with reflux at 4 months and I think, in her case, her frequent nursing was her attempt to soothe her throat.
Will he take a pacifier? In case he's just comfort nursing sometimes...

  • My DD would probably eat every hour if I let her! In the last few weeks she has slowly been eating closer to every 3 hours instead. I think this is because I went back to work and she is getting 3-4 oz bottles of BM at daycare, so she is probably getting more at a feeding than when she is nursing? She sometimes goes 2 hours in the evening. I think for awhile my DD would eat every 1-2 hours because I hadn't figured out that she was telling me she was tired instead of hungry. When she does this now, I give her a paci and hold her like I am nursing her. She will fight it for a minute, then usually fall asleep. Hope this helps
  • DS eats every hour, sometimes even more often during the day.  Once in a while, he'll go 2 or 3 hours if we are out of the house running errands, but if we're home, he eats all.the.time.  I don't mind though - he used to eat by the books, and woke up every 2 hours all night - once he started the hourly feeding, he started sleeping much better at night.  He wakes every hour from about 8 - 11, but then usually usually sleeps at least 6 - 8 hours.  If he skips a feeding during the day though, he makes up for it at night.

I'd say as long as you are okay feeding him so often, no biggie - if it's really killing you, you can try slowly spacing out his feedings each day until he's going 2-3 hours.
