Not having a Shower: What will I need to buy ahead of time?

Hi everyone,

I'm not having a baby shower, so I'm trying to figure out what things I will need/want ahead of time..I will have a baby naming a few weeks after the baby is born, but I assume that most people will get us gifts once we have the baby...What things should I get ahead of time?? It seems like I'm going to be buying quite a lot of things! Do you think I should get my swing and/or bouncer seat pre-baby or wait until someone buys it for us after the baby is born? Thanks for the advice!

  • Other than the obvious stuff (diapers, wipes, clothing, blankets, pacifier, a place for baby to sleep, bath tub, shampoo, moisturizer, nursing or bottlefeeding supplies, car seat, etc.)...

Our LO loves his swing and we use it every day.

  • You can probably wait to see if someone buys you a swing as a gift. We didn't have a swing till LO was over a month old. We did use a bouncy chair from the beginning and he used it a lot longer than he did the swing.
  • Check out the latest edition of the Baby Bargains book. I found it truly helpful. Also check out this list from rookie moms:

  • We didn't have a shower because we could afford everything we wanted and we didn't want to really put pressure on anyone to buy us presents. Having said that, we made a registry because my parents and siblings wanted to get us exactly what we wanted and not something they chose. I kept adding stuff for me to keep track of and also when things were being bought off....and get what, we had about 61 items (big stuff not like blankets or bibs or anything) and we got about 55 of it bought for us. My parents bought everything stroller related, my sister got the crib, changing table and dresser, my cousin got the bouncer, friends got random stuff like bottles, blankets, books, toys, bibs, safety kits, mattress pads, etc, and DH's family got the car seat, breast pump, travel bed, bedding and a few other things. The only big ticket item left to buy is a high chair. I was really happy how things turned out, I mean people bought stuff because they wanted to, they went out and found the registry themselves, not because they were invited to a shower and HAD to buy a present.
  • I'm not havign a shower either.  We'll have a bris 8 days after LO is born, but in my family, gifts for that are generally money to be used for his bar mitzvah and college.  Friends and some family will buy gifts, but we're not counting on that.  Since we follow pretty traditional jewish rules, we can't buy anything before our son is here.  My parents and ILs are getting us a lot of stuff.  So far, they've gotten us the following, and keeping it all at their houses or having it delivered:

    -crib, dresser/changer/hutch, glider

    -carseat

    -stroller

    -coming home outfit

    -diaper bag

-a bassinet (loaned from a friend - so she's also giving me the sheets for it)

Stuff we need to get organized before LO is born:

    -diapers

-clothes (we'll go with ILs to the Carters outlet a month before he's due)

    -Boppy

Stuff DH will have to go get from Buy Buy Baby right after he is born:

    -pump

    -more diapers

    -swing/bouncer combo

Wow for someone who did not WANT to make people buy you gifts, you still created a registry and you know exactly how many items you got off of it.  What you did is not really any different IMO, except people just gave you gifts w/o the shower/party.

My shower will be after LO is here, not b/c I am wanting gifts, but as a time for everyone to meet your baby.

this.  You need the car seat, it's good to have 1 -2 newborn outfits because you never know the actual weight and just in case.  Also good to have at least 1 box of new born diapers if you are doing disposable.

  • I'm in the same boat.  I've been trying to come up with a list of what we'll want immediately, what we'll want before the bris (when I assume we'll get lots of stuff as presents), and what we can wait for.  Here's my list so far.  (Comments/advice are very welcome!)

Need by the time baby gets home from hospital

    • Furniture and crib mattress
    • Bedding (bedding set, crib pad)
    • Car seat
    • Diaper pail
    • Changing pad and cover
    • Boppy
    • Some clothing, a blanket
    • Some diapers/wipes/other consumables

Need for first week (before bris)
    • Snap and Go or stroller
    • One week?s worth of clothing (day, sleeping, swaddling)
    • Diapers
    • Bathtub
    • 1-2 baby towels and washcloths
    • Burp cloths
    • Pacifiers
