Someone posted below asking if others put their LO down awake or asleep. Everyone that responded said they put them down drowsy/awake.
I feel guilty. At night time, we always put LO to bed asleep. He is a difficult one to put to sleep and very difficult to keep asleep. A girl that goes to my church was holding my DS one evening (when he was fussy) and he started to drift off to sleep a few times in her arms, but would then fidget and get super fussy and cry. She just had her 4th child a few days ago, so she knows about children pretty well. She said "wow....he's a hard one to keep asleep. My kids have always been good sleepers." It made me feel bad.
But she's right. The only thing at night that will put him to sleep is eating. So feeding is the last thing we do before putting him into bed.
For naps, he sleeps in the swing. About half the time he puts himself to sleep, but he's being lulled to sleep by the swinging. The other half, he fusses and we have to sit there and "shhhhhh" or sing, and hold the paci in his mouth (this can last 15-25 minutes).
We need to work on doing naps in his crib. But even if he falls asleep in my arms and I put him down in his crib asleep, he will wake up and cry after a few minutes. The paci won't soothe him during the day. He then will be awake enough to smile at us, as if it's funny. That's why we've resorted to the swing for naps. We're kind of timid, or feel like we don't have the patience to try naps in the crib right now (b/c we know he'll sleep longer in the swing, and only max 30 min in crib).
Sometimes he falls asleep in my arms, and is definitely out asleep, but then will wake up fidgeting and get fussy. I'll have to "shhhh" him and hold a paci in his mouth for several minutes. This can go on and on for many minutes. It's a taxing process. He won't even sleep next to me in bed. He fidgets and fusses.
So, I just wanted to say that I admire all of you that put your LO down drowsy/awake. I am actually envious that your LO's can put themselves to sleep. I want to work on it with LO but need to get the patience to try it.
Re: Those that put LO down drowsy/awake
Just in the last week am I able to do this. It still isn't all the time that LO agrees that this is the right thing to do lol.
If LO sleeps in the swing for naps, oh well at least he's sleeping. Everyones LO's are different. Don't beat yourself up. You sound like you're doing all the right things. It will happen in time.
L didn't go down drowsy but awake until she was almost 6 months. She STTN consistently since 3 months though, so it was fine with us. We fed her to sleep until 4 1/2 months, then began just rocking her to sleep. We never stressed over it.
