Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Acid reflux medicine not working - help

DS has been on Acid Reflux medicine - a version of Zantac for a month.  The past couple of days he has been screaming his head off around 6pm, seems in pain when he burps.  I think that the reflux is bothering him again.  Has anyone experience the medicine stop working.  He is only on .6ml twice a day.

I am going to call the dr tomorrow but I wanted to find out your experience with this and what worked for you.  Did you increase the amount your child received or switch medicines? Or anything else I am not thinking of.

TIA

  • i would try increasing the meds, we had to increase DDs after about a month of being on it. Ive also heard that babies build up a tolerance against Zantac so it may not be working not matter how much you give your LO. I would also ask about trying a different med if you dont see any improvement.

  • We use Prevacid solutabs.  Not the generic - the real Prevacid.  The real stuff is strawberry flavored and tastes way better. DS won't even take the generic.  But anyway, I LOVE the prevacid.  He has virtually no reflux issues on it...if I miss a dose it's he*l in the house from how miserable he is.

  • At that age, we were at .7ml twice a day for the Zantac & DD was in the 50th percentile for weight.. Are you also able to get him to take it 20-30 mins before he eats? GL!
  • Zantac is very weight sensitive.

We have been upping Liam's dose .5 mL for every 3-5 pounds or so.

He started at 1.5 mL twice a day (2 months, 12 pounds) and is now at 3.5 mL twice a day (5 months, 23 pounds)

I would increase it a bit (or call your pedi first) and see if that helps.

  • I agree with PP. We had to increase DS's Zantac at 1.5months and I had to take dairy out of my diet. That made a HUGE difference! He's 14 weeks now and we haven't had to make any adjustments since (and he's a little chunk)!
  • zantac only neutralizes the acid, where prevacid/prilosec prevents it.  If LO is producing too much acid then the zantac wont touch it.  We had to switch after using it only for 2 weeks.
  • I have heard others say that Zantac does not work as well as Prilosec or Prevacid.  DS is on Prilosec and it has worked very well for him.

  • Late to the party but I second what PP have said. You probably either need to switch meds because the Zantac is no longer working or increase your dosage. It might just not be enough to make a difference anymore. We have to up our dosage every couple of weeks also.
