Baby girl ear piercing

We were team green so the world of having a daughter is completely new to me but I was wondering, if you are piercing your DD's ears, when are you doing it? I'm pretty sure you can't do it til they have their shots at 3 months but I'm wondering what every one else's experience has been or what you plan on doing.

  • I am waiting until she asks. There is no way I am putting my baby through the pain just bc I think it looks cute. That is cruel, IMHO. Besides, who am I to go and get holes stabbed through her body? What if she doesn't ever want them pierced?

  • I'm with the others.  She won't be getting them done until she asks and is old enough to care for them herself.  We got ours done for our 12th birthday growing up (except my little sister who talked her way into getting them done at 10 and had infections all the time she ended up letting them heal up in that first year and got them redone when she was older).  So, probably not until she's 12ish.

  • I think that is something a little girl should ask for and be able to take care of/maintain herself.  I will wait until DD mentions it - and probably won't say "yes" until she's 8 or so.

psh, I did mine when I was 34 weeks pregnant in my bathroom, if I could do that, I could do anyone at any age.

    Cute picture!!!!!!

And I agree. I think it would be a fun experience to share with her and one that she will look back on one day and remember fondly, hopefully, if that is what she does want.

  • I would never again pierce my daughters ears before they ask. We pierced our oldest when she was 6 months (this is when they would pierce them here in NC after the 2nd set of shots.) We had terible trouble and I let the grow up until she wanted them repierced. (The plus side our niece got really nice 14kt. earings 6 pairs of them.)

  • I would wait until she is old enough to ask for it if she wants it done.  I had my ears pierced without my consent and I was pissed off!  I remember it vaguely as I was 3 or 4, but to this day I still won't wear earrings. I'm not a big jewelery person at all.  In fact the only jewelery I wear is my wedding band and engagement ring.

  • I didn't get my first dd's done and I regret it...She's 5 now and says she wants them, but when I suggest getting them done, she says no...so I wish I would have done it when she was a baby. I am absolutely getting my new dd's done as soon as soon as the doctor gives the okay!

  • If we have a girl (we are team green), we will likely do it before she is 6 months.

I understand the previous posters, but I feel the opposite. As the first born my mom didn't pierce my ears until I asked. She did do my younger sisters when she was a baby. I always told my mom I wish she would have done it when I was a baby because it took me forever to finally go I was a chicken. I didnt get them pierced til I was a teenager.

Besides, ears are so easy, if your child decides they don't like them, they can take the earrings out and let them close.

  • Most places do ear peircings after 6 weeks. Yes 6 Honestly the earlier you do them the better off you are if you are going to do them before she is 12+. If you want them done save yourself and the person who is peircing thems sanity. I used to be a manager of a Pericing Pagoda and I HATED people who would bring there kids between 1-12 in to get there ears peirced. If you get them done before they are 1 they wont pull on them and by the time they are old enough to explorre things like that they will have had them for so long that they wont bother them. Also caring for them is much easier before 1 also. As for people who say "what if my baby dosent want them, the way I look at it is they can always take them out and let them close. Plus if you do them early they wont remember having it done and sometimes babies dont even cry when they have them done but if you get them done after age 1 and before i'd say 12 you will have a problem with the cleaning and potentially getting them done since most kids will do one and them freak out before you can do the other one

  • DO NOT DO IT!!!   Thats my recommendation. I had my daughters done when she was 3 months old. When she was tiny they were fine, but when she hit the 8 month- 3 year age range, she was terrible with allowing me to clean & change them.

At one point 3 grown adults had to hold her while I cleaned and turned them. Let me just say it was the worst experience ever and in hindsight I would wait until your daughter is 5 or 6, wants earrings, and has a good understanding of the need to clean and maintain earrings.

I would reccomend finding a pair you like and leaving them in for a while. As far as cleaning them just wash them when you are washing her face. I used to peirce ears and once they are healed(6weeks) they dont need to be cleaned everyday

So you're saying to go to a place like jewelry store or Piercing Pagoda to pierce your small child/infant?  You're an idiot.

My ears were pierced at birth. If I have a DD, her ears will be pierced by the PEDIATRICIAN'S office.

Trust me, I only messed with them if we had to, like when a backing was missing and need replacing, or she lost one earring and too many people had asked why she was wearing two different earrings. I only cleaned them once in awhile and it was not as easy as just doing it when you washed her face. In theory it sounds like a great plan, but when you have a kicking, screaming child, reality is way different.

They do this?! I am getting them done at a piercing shop that we know the owner of but I would rather do it a a pedi's office! I don't think Tricare would cover it though :P

Piercing shops are NOT equipped to handle the needs of piercing an infant or small child.  Your pediatrician may or may not do it.  Mine would.

  • We want to wait until DD asks for it and can take responsibility in cleaning them herself. I actually have a few family members and have known some people that wished their parents hadn't pierced their ears.

  • We are going to get them done when she's a baby, it's always been that way in my family/ culture. We even get our noses pierced at a very young age. DH was against getting the ear piercing but now he's come around. My mom and I will figure out where we're getting it done but honestly, if we don't get it done, we will never hear the end of it from all my Indian relatives.
  • Like some of the other posters, I will not be getting DD's done until she is old enough to ask for it and to take care of them.

  • To prove my point, I just had a 15 minute battle with a soon to be 7 year old, and she still does not have new earrings in her ears...

To all moms of little girls, just wait, I promise its way easier then getting them done this young.

  • I really don't want her getting them done until she's at least 10. I got mine done on my 10th birthday and had to take care of them (with my mom's help occasionally). I feel that she should ask for them first and be able to have the responsibility of keeping them clean before she can get her ears pierced.

  • I teach third grade and I don't know why so many people think that 7-8 is the age that girls can care for earrings themselves. It drives me crazy when I see a girl come to class with freshly pierced ears because I know I have 2-3 weeks of bleeding, oozing, picked-at ear holes to deal with. And some of them cry every time a little drop of blood comes out, but still they won't leave them alone.

I'd be inclined to wait at least until age 9-10, but that's just my two cents.

    Hmm

Piercing Pagoda is the last place I would get a child's ears pierced. I worked in a respectable tattoo parlor and the safest way to be pierced is with a needle that has been sterilized with a medical autoclave and with surgical stainless steel jewelry, PERIOD. Getting pierced with a gun, especially at a young age, can really turn out crooked and infected. An ear piercing (lobes) can take up to 6 weeks to heal and must be properly taken care of, with sea salt and distilled water rinses. Why do you say that a 12 year old girl wouldn't know how to take care of an ear piercing? Not every child that age is irresponsible. I think it is a right of passage, and if the mother and daughter (or son) agree that the child will properly take care of them as instructed, it will teach that child some responsibility and show them a bit about themselves (and how their body can handle such an experience/level of pain, so to speak.)

You sure do have a lot of shiiiity opinions
