Leaving the house with LO

We've gone out a handful of times with the little guy. He's okay in the car and at someone's house, but really not good for a store or appointment. I've tried driving longer to make sure he's asleep first, then run into a store or doctor appointment. No good. He's not a happy camper. I'm wondering if it is just because he's not used to "going out." Any suggestions? Please tell me I'm not alone. I'm now nervous about outtings.

Thanks!!!

  • DS is normally an angel when we are out, sleeping through just about every place we have been. Do you have a wrap or a sling of some sort? DS loves being in his, and really knocks out when I carry him in it.

  • Are you FF or BF'ing? I EBF'ed, but when we take him to Mass where I obviously can't whip out a boob, I pump a bottle. It keeps him content as long as his little belly is full and he has a clean diaper.

Sometimes he isn't particularly hungry (I feed him right before we leave) but he likes the comfort of it, I think. I would try that.

  • Sounds like he's hungry to me! Whip out the boob or bottle and then continue with the shopping :)

  • First of all, don't be too nervous about your LO crying in public.  I was terrified to go anywhere in case he started crying.  I went to Buy Buy Baby and he was fussy for a bit - then I thought, this is a baby store!  And the crying/fussing of a 2 year old is much louder!  I got him settled down and I calmed down.  Second, ditto the wrap.  I find our Target trips are much easier with him in my Moby than with him in the carseat.  Good luck!

  • We have a travel system that collapses really easy.  As long as she's cruising in her stroller she's happy.  Last trip to the mall she was awake the whole time but happy as can be.

We also go out almost every day so I think part of it is that she knows it's just what we do!

  • Our first experience out was s nightmare because I didn't realize how long it took us to get ready so she was hungry. Oops!

Now I feed her before we go anywhere and I always bring a pumped bottle and she's an angel. I started using the stroller two days ago and she loves being curled up in her carseat.

    It gets easier I promise!!

  • My LO does pretty good in stores, but we usually use a shopping cart to put her car seat in and so when she does get fussy we push it back and forth or keep her moving.  She seems to like the vibrations.

A friend of mine had a super fussy baby and uses a ergobaby carrier when she goes to the store and her LO is much happier that way.

  • DD is a nightmare if we use the stroller or a cart.  I have to wear her.  She'll look around at the lights for a while, then fuss a second.  I'll give her a binky and she'll snooze.

On Black Friday, she slept the entire time we were shopping while I had her in my Beco carrier.  I had 3 pumped bottles (because we were out a long time).  I didn't use any of them because she slept the entire time.

If you don't already have one and are interested in some kind of babywearing device.....steer away from the baby bjorn.  It's easy to put on but it's murder on your back.

  • I agree with wearing him while you're out. DS sleeps so well when I wear him! I took him out for a short trip today and just had the carseat in the shopping cart and he got so fussy I had to take him out and carry him anyway, I wish I'd bought my carrier! I'm think I'm going to ask for a wrap for Christmas.
  • Abigail is like this.  First of all, she hates the car seat and screams pretty much the entire time in it.  Second, she just needs to be held all day, so being anywhere is very difficult. Third, she hates being worn.  I've tried every freakin carrier style out there.
  • I've learned that it works best for us if I plan our outing so that we leave immediately after he is fed.  This means we are all ready to go, car packed, baby bag ready, etc.....then I feed him.  I also always bring 1 pumped bottle if I think we will be gone longer than 2hrs.  LO will usually go 3hrs between feedings, but just in case he gets fussy this works great!  I don't wear him, just use a travel system and as long as the stroller is moving he is usually happy...
