Baby Names

Would you use a name a cousin named their child?

Hello all.

OK, so I have always loved the name Simon, since I was little.  My cousin has a son named Simon who is now 8 or 9.  I don't see the child very often, maybe once a year.  If you were me would you use it?  We didn't use it for DS #1, but thinking about it more and more for this one.

Thanks ladies.

  • No, I wouldn't. My cousin has a daughter named Victoria and I LOVE that name, but I would feel weird using it.
  • Loading the player...

  • I think even once per year is a bit much.. and you can't possibly think this will bode well w/Simon #1's mommy, right? What about as a middle name?

Or, if you do use it as a first name [which is totally up to you, as well] just don't be too surprised with the reactions you'll get, and I'd recommend not sharing his name until he is born.

  • I would not use it.
  • I wouldn't do it either. I actually have aunts who both named their sons Clay and we call one Big Clay cause he is older and call the other Little Clay because he is the younger. It does make it difficult and confusing for the rest of us, so I definitely would not do it.

  • I wouldn't, for the same reasons PPs mentioned.

  • If I saw him once/year, probably not.  But, my DH has a cousin he rarely sees with his name (Kurt).  He sees the parents often but it has never seemed to be an issue.  I also have a second cousin with my name.  I met her once.  No big deal, she is about 15 years younger than me.
  • No I would not.

I have 40 first cousins and about half of them are old enough to be married and have kids. Between them all they have 35 kids. That's 75 names that are off-limits in my mind and I still managed to find a names that I love for my kids.

  • If I really LOVED the name, for me it would depend on which cousin it was because there are cousins that I'm really close to (even those I only see at holidays) and then there are cousins that I'm not close to at all that I hardly ever see and don't ever talk to.

If it was a cousin I was close to or even somewhat close to, I definitely wouldn't use the same name. However, if it was a cousin that I pretty much never see and don't ever talk to, and we LOVED the name, we'd probably still consider using it.

If you are at all close to the cousins's mom, I would not use it or if you absolutely want to use it, use it as a middle name.

  • I wouldn't but I am close to my cousins. Even some of my [biological] cousins that I am not close too, I would feel weird using the names of their children.

I love Victoria and Alessia but they are my niece's names.

  • My cousin has a son named Nicholas James who's 7.   I see her maybe once a year or couple years.    We talk on FB all the time.   I didn't even give it a 2nd thought when naming my son Nicholas James.

    It's totally cool.

  • If you hardly see the cousin and son, I say go for it!

  • I know this is a crazy concept, but why don't you ask your cousin? And if you aren't close enough to ask her then you clearly aren't close enough to worry whether or not you use the same name she used.

  • I wouldn't, but I am one who would rather not use the same names as family or friends kids...and prefer that they don't use my kids names either.

    This exactly

    This.

My dad's cousin named her daughter the same name as me (so, the same situation you describe), and it's not a big deal at all.  I've only met the girl once or twice, though.

I think it just depends on your family and your relationship with your cousin.  And, in some ways, how many cousins you have.  If you have only 5 first cousins like I do, it'd be kind of weird to share a name.  Maybe it'd be less of a big deal if you have a huge family, though.

  • I think it's a little weird, but in your situation it's probably no big deal. Your families are starting to split off and form their own groups. It most likely won't matter in a few years.

If you're feeling weird about it, ask your cousin and see what they think. If it bothers them, you might want to reconsider.

  • Nope. I have only seen my cousin's son once in his life--he's 5 now. He has my all time fave boy name: Luke. I can't take it. We have a small family on my dad's side, so even though we don't see each other often and live on opposite sides of the country--it's a pretty tight circle.
  • I used the same first name as my cousin's kid.  Don't think i've ever met the kid anyways.

Thanks ladies.  I do plan on doing this as we get closer.  We are team green right now and waiting to hopefully find out the gender next ultrasound the week of Christmas- the last one the baby wouldn't show.  So, this may not even be an option.

My husband is in the camp where we use it- we aren't close to the cousin at all and these kids will be second cousins.... I am not 100% sure- will ask the Mom if we are having and boy. Wanted to poll others.

Take care ladies. Thanks for your honesty!

  • Yes, I would.  Two of my mom's cousin's named their daughters Michelle which was already my sister's name.  It wasn't that big of a deal.  One of DH's cousin's named his son the same fn as my husband and one of their daughters' name is the our top girl choice.  We aren't taking the name off our list.

On my side, fortunately for me all my cousins like occupation names so I'm safe with Francis :)

  • Depends. On my side, we tend to all use names that are very classic. The result is there are some repeats. No one cares. So I would do it in a heart beat. On H's side, this would be a no no.
  • I am having the same porblem with this! We have always vowed not to spill the baby's name until the birthday and my husband has fallen in love with a first cousin's first name!  They would not share the same last name or even middle name but I still can't fall in love with it.... any thoughts?
