we go up a size when sh starts having frequent blow outs and they start getting hard to close shes currently in size 2 at about 12 or 13 lbs we find out exactly on wed.
We were getting too near blow-outs and the leg holes are too tight on the NB ones. We've been using the 1's for about a week now. She was 8lbs at birth but even at 9lbs was still using the NBs. I think she's getting near 10lbs now.
My kids were 8# 6oz and 8# 3oz and neither have ever worn a NB diaper. I work in NICU and we only have preemie extra smalls (the size of a maxi pad), preemies, and size 1. We end up switching babies to size 1 around 5-6lbs and just roll the top front down if it goes too high. IMO NB size are unnecessary .
We moved to size 1 when DD was having a bad chaffing/ diaper rash with the NB brand we were using and the only other brand we had on hand was the size 1, so we just stuck with it. She was probably about 9 lbs when we made the switch and she was about 2 1/2 weeks.

I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.
