Baby Names

Help please

DH and I just can't agree on a girls name. We both love the name Abeni. It is said like Ab-un-knee and her nickname would be Abby. It is very special to us because it is an African name meaning "we prayed for her and now she is ours."

I think we should use it as a first name but DH says middle. So, what do you think. Better as a first or middle name?

Re: Help please

  • I love the meaning. I pronounce it like Ebony when looking at it. Is that about right? Guess it depends what the other name in the running is before I can make judgement which sounds better as fn vs mn.

It's pronounced like Ebony just with Ab instead of Eb. If that makes sense. Stick out tongue

The other names we have right now are Kayleen and Reagan. So either Abeni Kayleen/ Kayleen Abeni or Abeni Reagan/ Reagan Abeni.

  • Its really unique! Do you & DH have African names? If it fits in, I'd go for fn but if your like Lauren & Joseph I'd maybe use it as a MN. Either way, I like it.
  • The meaning is beautiful!

I think it flows better as a first name with both of the names you chose for a mn. If you use it as a mn I think Reagan sounds better as a fn with it. I didn't like it at first glance, but the more I look at it and say it in my head the more it grows on me. I would go for it as a fn.

  • That is such a beautiful name! Love it. :) I'm sorry that I don't know whether it should be a first or middle. I think it depends on the other name you choose. Do you have any top contenders?

Scratch my last post. I think Abeni needs to be her first name. It's prettier than the other names and has more meaning. I think I like Reagan as the middle name. Abeni Reagan. ;)

  • i think you should use it as a middle name.  out of your choices, i'd go with kayleen as the first name.
  • Honestly, I love this name.  And that says something, because I'm usually not a fan of the more "unusual" names.  I had a room-mate in college named Mosadi, which is Tswana (and several other south African dialects) for woman or wife.  I always liked that name as well, since it fit her.  However, I have a feeling that people would be quite upset if I took that lovely name and used it on my melanin-challenged children.

I'm not a fan of Kayleen, but Reagan is OK.
