3rd Trimester

Time in hospital after birth?

Anyone know?  I should have asked my Dr, but didn't.  =(

I go in for induction tonight EEEK, and they start Pitocin in the morning.  So I expect to have my baby girl around 3:00ish PM Monday.  You think they'll send me home Monday, or Tuesday, or even Wednesday...  assuming it's a routine vag birth.

I should add:  it's a total guess that I'll have a routine vag birth, and the time.  No one knows when it'll all really happen.  I do know that.

Re: Time in hospital after birth?

  • I was told vaginal is about 2 days, and c-section is 3-4 days.

  • Around here you'd be going home Wednesday - 2 nights' stay for routine vaginal birth.  4 nights' for CS.
  • I just had my baby on Tuesday Morning at 2:29am and i was released on Wednesday at 1:00pm so it was about 1 day stay.  You can stay for up to 48 hours though.  I had a normal uncomplicated vaginal birth.
  • my hospital told me that they keep us 3 days and 2 nights for routine vaginal delivery, I forget what they said for c/s

  • For me it's two days after you give birth...so in your case, Wednesday.  Good luck!!!

  • In my area it is 24 hours for a regular vag birth ( no strep B present ). 48 hours if strep B is present. I was released 24 hours after my son and they plan the same for this one.

  • For a first child, with a routine vaginal birth, my hospital keeps you for 48 hours after the birth of the child.  For subsequent children, assuming everything has gone well, they typically release mom & baby after 24 hours.

For c-sections, it's 3-4 days no matter how many kids you've had previously.

  • In our hospital you can't stay 48 hours past when the baby is born.  DS was born at 3:30pm on a Friday and I went home by 11am Sunday, so it was just under 48 hours.  A c-section is 4 or 5 days.
  • DD was born at 4:50 on Friday and we went home Sunday morning.

  • I had my daughter at 2:23 pm and was told I could go home the next morning. I also had a natural birth though, I dont know if having any pain meds changes the time...

  • here at the MTF, you can leave after 24-36 hours as long as the early discharge nurse says its ok...otherwise its 48 hours for a vag birth with no complications
  • I had DD at 2:00 a.m on Friday, and even though I felt great and wanted to go home Saturday , they wouldn't let me until Sunday.

For a c-section, it would have been at least 3 days.

  • When Kate, I went to the hospital on Monday night (induction started at 8), had her on Thursday morning (c-section) and went home Sunday afternoon.  So there's no way to know how long the induction will take.

Standard hospital stay is 2 days for a vaginal birth and 3 for a c-section.

    Good luck!

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I went in the hospital on a Friday evening for my induction. DS was born on Sunday morning via c-section, and I left the hospital Wednesday afternoon.

If you deliver late tomorrow afternoon, I would assume you'd probably go home Wednesday morning.

  • Oh wow I am so misinformed. I thought I could have my baby, have it examined, placenta delivered and within 12 hours leave...ugh. I hate hospitals.

  • I am thinking vag birth 1day and c-section 3-4 days
  • The hospital requires mom to stay at least 12 hours for a vaginal birth. The pediatrician decides when LO can go home. The pediatrician that we will be using typically allows LO to be d/c 24 hours after birth.
  • With DD I went in for an induction on the evening of Aug 7th and ended up w/ an emergency c/s the next evening.  She was born at 9:04pm on the 8th.

They don't count that night you stayed in the hospital until you have the baby.  Once you have the baby it's 2 midnights for vaginal birth and 3 midnights for a c/s.

     Good luck!

  • 48 hours or 24 hours minimum for vaginal deliveries and for a c/s it is 72 hours or 48 hours minimum. I haven't actually known anyone to leave early though but you can request it if you feel you are fine and the Drs ok it.

  • My hospital says if everything goes perfectly 24 hours for vaginal and 48 for c/s.

  • I think it depends on your insurance.  Mine lets me stay up to two days after vaginal and four after c-section.  I had a vaginal birth Saturday evening and will leave tomorrow morning.

  • They push 48 hours for vaginal birth and 3-4 days for c-section.

It used to be routine to let 2nd time moms who delivered vaginally to go home after 24 hours but apparantly there was a high re-admit rate for jaundice, feeding problems, etc.

I just delivered on 11/11 and managed to get out about 30 hours later (I delivered at about noon on 11/11 and got out at about 6pm on 11/12) but the pediatrician had this LOOOOOOOOONG schpele about why 48 hours was ideal, etc.  But our baby had zero factors that were worrisome - he was eating great, no jaundice, HUGE (9 pounds 11 ounce)...  we also wanted to get out of the germy hospital where neither of us were comfortable and home to our DD.  We saw the pedi 3 days later and there were no issues.

My OB had zero issues releasing ME at 24 hours pp.  It was the pedi that needed convincing but in the end she released the baby.

  • 36 hours. If you deliver before 8pm, then you are there until wed. After 8pm thur morning discharge. At least that is how our hospital is.
  • I was in the hospital for about 36 hours after D. As long as everything goes as planned this time I only plan on being in the hospital for 24 hours.
