Parenting after a Loss

xp from AP: Babywearing in store question

When going to the grocery store or somewhere where we would use a cart I would like to put DD#1 in the cart and wear #2.  Logistically, how do you guys suggest doing this in the winter? Do you put #1 in the cart and carry #2 in the store and then put them in the wrap/carrier?  I just worry about spending the time outside in the cold trying to put her in a wrap, especially since she is so young. Also, I used to occasionally use a bucket style sling and a hand me down baby bjorn with #1. I'm no longer going to use the sling with #2 because of all of the dangers that I've now read about.  I have also heard that it's not good for LO's to spend a lot of time in the bjorn because of how they are positioned.  I was thinking about buying a new sling because of how easy it is to use but I worry about having back pain.  I was also thinking about using the moby but I really was hoping to use something faster and easier.  The other constraint is money - I really don't want to spend more then $50 because money is so tight for us right now.  Do you have any thoughts or suggestions on this?Thank you so much for your help and insight!

  • well, the good thing about the moby would be you can pull up the fabric to cover her legs and then just zip YOUR coat up around her as you wear her to keep her warm. It takes me less than 30 seconds to put X in the moby, I just put the moby on at home before we go. honestly that's the most inexpensive carrier i've found. Do you already have a moby?

  • When I have #2 I will totally wear 2 while 1 is in the cart. We have the moby and the ergo. The moby would be good and easy because really you could have it wrapped before you get there and quickly jsut slip lo in it. Its not as cold here but if it was I probably would carry 2 in the store then put her in. I took Sara to this big shopping event the other day that didnt allow strollers and I carried her in because it was puring and then slipped her in for the shopping once we were dry inside. Easy easy.

This is exactly.  I took them both for a walk the other day.  Put N in the stroller and popped Z in the Moby.  I buttoned an oversized heavy sweater aroudn both of us, and wrapped a shawl around my neck and her upper body.  Put a hat on her and she was toasty warm.  When it's colder, I layer the baby up and sort of drape a blanket around her.

I cannot recommend the Moby enough!

  • I always put my carrier (moby or ergo) on before I leave the house. So I pop H in really quick as soon as we get to where we are going. Also, You should look into the Ergo, its great on the back. I stood at a baby fair with my 18lb LO for three hours selling my nursing bracelets. My legs ached cause I'm so out of shape but my back was fine!
  • Hmmm...I don't have two, so really don't have any suggestions from that regard.  But last winter I would put the moby on at home, carry little man into the store and pop him in.  it was super easy.  And just the other night a friend was raving about a cart cover, not from the germ perspective, but because she could grab a cart by her car, put the cover in and then pop LO in without worrying about the cold cart.
  • If you like the moby, you could find an inexpensive woven wrap in a size 4 that you could use for quick, easy on the go carries (the kangaroo is my fave out and about carry). I can get DD wrapped up in a size 4 in less than a minute. If it is too cold outside, I carry her in, under my coat, then wrap her once I get inside the store. www.thebabywearer.com 's FSOT forum has a lot of really reasonably priced wraps.
