Newborn positioning in RS ?

This is my first day with my ring sling (SBP) and so far I *love* it -- it's so much easier to wrangle than my Sleepy wrap, it's so beautiful and soft, and it's so much more comfortable too! (after an hour or so, my Sleepy would hurt my back -- I didn't think the RS would be more supportive but somehow it is -- I think because I can make it so tight).

But...

So my baby HATES the cradle position (why I sent back the Hotsling I bought last week) so I thought I'd try tummy to tummy (which was what she's used to in my Sleepy wrap), and it works great, except how to I support her head? She's getting better head control but she's still not solid, and in the Sleepy, I could always tuck her head under the shoulder fabric and go hands free -- that's not an option in a RS, is it? How can I bring the fabric up high enough?

  • Have you pulled the top rail above her neckline a bit? See this page (you may have to register at thebabywearer.com to view it, but it's free and awesome). If you have enough width on the sling to keep a good pocket and have extra I would try folding the top rail over a few times to make kind of a padded strip behind her neck. That should give a bit more support.

  • I would just pull the top rail kind of up over the back of her head a bit and her head would lean back a bit so she was kind of looking up at me, not totally flopped back, but I could see her little face.  Oh, I miss those days.  She was so stinkin cute in that RS!  Have fun!

  • Thanks, guys!

I don't know how I had her differently positioned today but somehow she was kind of leaned forward and didn't need head support -- I don't know how that happened. I can try making the inside pocket shorter, I guess? I don't know how high it has to come up on the inside. It's just when I tighten it enough across her shoulder, Her head is ABOVE the rings in corsage position. so I'm not sure how to make it go that high?

I still heart my RS so much... I never thought I'd like it more than my Sleepy, but it's so much more comfy!

  • The head should be where you can kiss it.  I think the top rail of mine was usually in line with my armpit and then I'd just kind of pull it a little over her head.  So her cheek was against my chest (head turned to the side) and face looking up a bit.  I usually start with the rings on my shoulder because as I adjust they get pulled down.

  • If you go to www.sakurabloom.com, the baby on their front page is positioned like what I'm trying to describe.

  • Awesome. I think that's what I'm doing, or at least what I accomplished today.

I'm not sure my sling is quite as wide as the sakuras. It's a SBP.
