If you want to get pregnant when you are overweight that's fine. But the OP is clearly feeling conflicted about it and with good reason.

Clearly the other board is coming to her rescue now. Awesome, a whole group of those that base someone's parenting ability on weight. Yay.

I would focus on getting yourself healthy before you consider bringing a child into the world.

If you cant take care  of yourself how can you take care of a child?

I think its selfish to be overweight and not try to do anything before taking on the huge physical demands of pregnancy.

why put yourself at additional risk if you dont have to?

    What. The. Eff.

I didn't have a single complication in my first pregnancy and I was (and still AM) very overweight. My way-north-of 300 lbs friend is 36 weeks and has not had a single complication whatsoever. No GD, no pre-e, no anything at all. She also got pregnant immediately. I think she will take care of her kid just fine.

I have never seen such a judgmental post in my life.

But then there would have to be a "naturally skinny" board too.

How, exactly, does being overweight mean that you are unable to care for yourself or for another human being?

I think you should take care of your body. Putting your own health and body first is generally good practice.

If you are overweight due to a medical condition, then I get it and I hope its controlled and you are working with an MD and maybe 200 for her IS healthy and good.  It's not meant to offend, but let's be real. Being overweight makes it harder to do daily tasks, have energy, etc.

Being thoughtless and unempathetic makes it hard to raise a decent human being. Maybe you should think about that.

Have you ever been obese? If not, shut your damn mouth. You don't have any idea what makes life harder or not.

  • We don't claim the crazies!

And I'm "overweight" but can still run a couple miles without stopping, have no energy issues and eat healthy so according to crazy Texas chic, I have no business becoming a mother at this point in my life.

Yep, makes perfect sense to me.

I see the way my husband's family struggles and I wish they would find the motivation to lose the weight.  Having a baby is a great motivator IF you are looking for one to lose weight. She asked what to do, and said she was scared,

Geez you guys are acting like she posted a picture of herself and I told her to drop a few. Give me a break!

You just want some drama for your  boring saturday!

Horror stories.  Being judged for being overweight AND pregnant.  I guess ignorant people judging me because I am over weight they assume that you don't take care of yourself, etc.  Pretty much everything that everyone discussed here.

It happens. My OB had me also seeing a perinatologist because of my weight and "advanced maternal age." I loved my OB, but my peri was adamant that I would have high blood pressure, gestational diabetes and probably eclampsia because of my weight, which he thought was a bigger problem than my age. He was very negative and constantly seemed disappointed that I was in good health despite all of his dire predictions. My OB let me stop seeing him after 30w.

I had an uneventful pregnancy. My delivery was an emergency c/s because of issues unrelated to my size or age, but my recovery was very quick and easy.

Don't let anyone scare you into thinking your pregnancy will be X because of Y. Every pregnancy is different and they can't be predicted with a crystal ball.

My Saturday's not boring at all, thanks. This fat chick is doing about eleven things at the same time, with plenty of energy.

And really, you pretty much told her to drop a few without even seeing a picture.

that would be a low blow, but IMO, what you said was worse. You flat out asked how she can take care of a kid when she can't take care of herself, and that was offensive to a whole hell of a lot of people. I found it totally offensive, and it's not because I'm overweight. Keep telling yourself it's just everyone looking for drama.

OK, fine. First line sucks. I'm sorry and apologize, it was typed without thinking.

second line, I think its beneficial to try to reduce your weight by even a little bit if at all possible if you have an unhealthy BMI prior to becoming pregnant. If time allows. If you're facing issues, age, infertility, etc then  obviously this goes out the window and get pregnant.

But come on, why is there a ton of check in on the baby boards for moms who are trying to lose weight before TTC again. Or even those trying before they TTC. It's because it CAN present problems. Plain and simple.

    Crazy talk.

I have a coworker that started losing weight to be healthy. Now she eats less than 700 calories a day, excercises at least 3-4 hours a day and takes it as a compliment when someone thinks she sick- but still claims it's for health reasons.

I would bet good money any doctor would prefer to have a patient that is 10-20 lbs overweight but active than one who starves themselves.

My point was that her argument wasn't a strong one.

Since I have a slightly misshapen uterus, which has a risk factor during pregnancy, does that mean that I need to throw in the towel with ttc since that obviously will have an affect on me being a good parent?

Moms losing the baby weight? Are you this dense about everything or just things you know nothing about.

And BTW, BMI is a crock. When I got out of boot camp, I was 150 and at 5'6", that barely put me at healthy weight. Yet I was toned and fit.

Yes it is. The only way I would ever reach a "healthy" BMI is to cut off a leg. All of the doctors who have seen me agree that is not a good solution.

Oh, come on now Kdodge, if you really cared for your child and weren't so selfish you would cut off that leg so that you can be at a healthy weight.

  • I have what most consider a thin build, not skinny, but thin. I eat well but rarely excercise. Because of my lack of a decent physical regimen I do not consider myself healthy enough for pregnancy. Looking at me you would think I was healthy enough, but I know I could be in better shape strength and cardio-wise. This is why I plan on getting in better shape before I TTC.

My point? Just because I'm thin does not make me healthy enough for pregnancy. Therefore physical size and body shape does not determine overall health.

Sorry, but The Bump is full of women of all shapes and sizes. It's not just about you.

By saying what she said, Sarah is, in fact, saying that I am a bad mother because I am overweight, that my son is suffering because I don't jog and where a size 6. More than that, she is saying that anyone with a condition that would make them a high risk pregnancy is selfish and wrong for trying to have children. If you don't think that there are a couple of tons of people on these boards who would find that offensive, you are very wrong.

  • Sorry it took me so long to get here for this.  You know, it took me forever to drag my fat overweight self into my office where my computer is.
