Low placenta - How many cm to avoid c/s?

My placenta's not budging.  It's not scary low, but my dr feels like it might be best to have a c-section. It's 3 cm from the cervix and hasn't moved since 20 weeks.  She likes it to be greater than 5 cm.  I go back to get it checked again in 4 more weeks.  Anyone know at what point there dr's suggest c-section?

  • I would imagine at any point under 5 cm.

Perhaps I worded that poorly.  5 cm is what my OB suggested. I wondered what other's OBs have said.  Dr. Google seems to think around 2cm. so I tend to think my OB might be overly conservative.  I want to trust my her, but would like to educate myself on what the norm is.

  • Most of the doctors I'm familiar with (through friends/family, as well as the office I see) prefer closer to 5cm.  In a quickly progressing labor, I know of one who "allowed" a vaginal birth with the placenta 3cm from the cervix, but it was more because there wasn't really time to get prepped & into the OR for a c/s.  IMO, conservative is best in this situation, b/c the risk of placental hemmorage is really high if the placenta is too close to the cervix, and while a c/s isn't ideal, I'd really prefer to not hemmorage during childbirth.

Thanks for your reply.  Yes, I certainly want what's safest for the baby and I.  If that means a c/s, then so be it.  I had a fast labor with DD and she has already been hinting around about scheduling this one.  I live an hour from the hospital and getting there will already be an issue.  It would really be a problem if I start losing too much blood.

  • I had to have a repeat U/S at 28 weeks to see if my placenta had moved. The doctors at Duke and UNC, both, were satisfied if the placenta was more than 2cm away from the cervix. Mine had moved to 3+ so I'm OK'd for a vaginal delivery.

  • I just had mine checked and its at 2cm and the doc had no worries about a V-birth.
  • I would go with what your doctor say on that one because none of us can give you a answer because we don't know your medical histroy or any of the stuff that doctor knows.
