Breastfeeding

list of necessities?

Does anyone have a list of necessities for breast feeding?  I didn't bf with DD and this is all so new to me!  I want to make sure i'm totally prepared.  DS will be going to daycare at about 3 months.  How many storage containers (for freezing) should I have?  How many bras, tops, etc.  Also, is there anything that you wouldn't deem necessary but you really love having?  THANKS!

Re: list of necessities?

  • Lets see.....It depends on if your daycare wants you to bring bottles premade or if you can bring milk in storage bags to refill your bottle with. Either way- you'll need a ton of storage bags. And I would pump and freeze as much as humanly possible. (you will get attached to your breast milk, and if you or someone else spills some, you will no doubt cry over spilled milk)    I also found it handy to store the ounces that LO drinks per storage bag so you won't waste any and it's easier for daycare to stay on the same feeding schedule ect. My little guy drank 6 oz per feeding. So I would put 6 or sometimes 12 oz per bag.    Of course you won't know this until you LO arrives and you figure everything out.

I only had about two nursing bras. I am a working mother and those just didn't provide enough support for my large ladies. I wore the nursers at home and regular ones out.

I also LOVED my lilypads. They are silicone (<----I think) breast pads. they don't really leak, but you will need a rag when you take them off your boobs, you might have some leakage. They are washable and reuseable. Highly recommended by me :)

Everything else, is kinda trial and error. GL to you and LO!

  • My must haves:

    • Double electric pump with one spare set of parts
    • Total Baby app for iPhone or iPod Touch (great for timing nursing sessions)
    • Boppy pillow and an extra cover
    • Bebe Au Lait nursing cover
    • Dr. Brown bottles for daycare
    • Lansinoh milk bags for storing milk
    • Lansinoh breast pads for the early months when you leak like crazy
    • Lanolin for sore nipples
    • Ameda Comforl Gel pads (saved my breastfeeding and healed my cracked nipples)
    • Simple Wishes hands free pumping bustier - I tried the rubber band method and it didn't work well at all. This lets me get stuff done at work when pumping, or at home. My only regret is I went 12 weeks before buying it
    • One or two nursing bras (wait until 10 days or so after delivery to get fitted for one) - I like the deep plunge bra from Victorias Secret
    • Nursing tanks! I adore my Bravado tanks and wear them nearly every day. They have a real bra instead of just the shelf bra so there's plenty of support. I also wear the Target nursing tank at night.
    • Nursing Mothers Companion - this has been a great reference book
    • Breatfeeding class - I'm so glad I took this through our hospital

Good luck! The first few weeks were very hard but I'm so glad I stuck with it. We're at 6 months and going strong and honestly, I never expected to make it this far.

  • First of all, good for you for choosing to BF your little one. He will thank you for it. You will always need more freezer bags, so expect to buy lots!  You'll need a pump. Get a good one, it will save you so much grief (and in the long run, money). I work full time and have three nursing tanks and three bras. I don't leak much but bough a box of nursing pads just in case (plus, enables me to reuse my bras).  You don't really need a nursing cover, but I love mine. It makes it so much easier to cover myself. Plus it's pretty and makes me feel like a woman not so much like a tired mommy.

ETA: I noticed the PPs listed all kinds of stuff (extra pillows, lotions etc.) didn't use any of that stuff so don't think you have to go out and spend lots of money. BFing is pretty low-tech.
