So if your kid is sensitive to eating dairy

What are his/her symptoms?

We decided to try giving DS cheese, etc since he wasn't gaining despite my avoiding dairy.  We figured since his not gaining in the past was our big indication (or so we thought) of a dairy intolerance, we'd try something new.

It's been a few days and his # of poops has increased but he is also (I think) growth spurting and eating a TON.  He doesn't seem any more gassy.  Some poops have had a little mucus but he's also sick.

I plan to wait a few more days, we  have a scale to weigh w/ now at home so we can watch him closely.

Re: So if your kid is sensitive to eating dairy

  • If I have too much dairy DS has mucousy poops, very frequent poops, and a lot of reflux symptoms (coughing, hacking, crying in pain, throw up/spit up). I can have some dairy but I have to limit it for him. I don't feed him any dairy at meals.

  • Eli has a milk allergy.  When he was that age if he had milk products, he threw them up almost immediately and got a rash anywhere on his skin that it touched him.  Now that he's older (we haven't tried for about a year I think), he complains that his throat is itchy and his belly hurts.  He can have small amounts of dairy...like I can cook with butter, he doesn't have a problem with muffins/bread baked with small amounts of milk, etc.

I think having a scale at home is a great idea for you to be able to monitor him very closely.  It's great that he has such an appetite lately...I hope it shows in his numbers for you guys!

  • We had colic, painful gas, rock hard tummy, weight loss, frequent vomiting (as in, hardly being able to keep anything down- hence the weight loss), diarrhea, and blood and mucous in stools.  According to my pedi GI, 60% of babies with a dairy issue also have a soy issue (it turns out DS is very sensitive to soy).

Good luck, I hope he starts gaining!

  • Mucousy poops when EBF, soft stools after weaning, diarrhea if she gets straight cheese, milk, etc.
  • DS#1 would get eczema patches on his cheeks.  They'd be the worst within a couple hours of eating dairy, and fade over the course of a week.  He out grew it around 2.5 years.

DS#2 and DS#3 are sensitive to dairy through my breastmilk, and would e irritable and more refluxy.  #2 outgrew the dairy sensitivity around 5 months, hoping this one is the same.

  • DD was older when we realized that she had problems with dairy. The major indication was that she had very frequent and loose poops. If she had a lot of dairy, she?d be clearly uncomfortable (probably gas or cramping). Looking back, I suspect that her eczema was related.

If it?s cow milk allergy, try goat milk products.

  • DD gets a bad rash all over her belly and gets extremely constipated.  She also tends to get a really bad (open / bleeding sores) diaper rash.  We keep her dairy free, but every now and then some butter or something sneaks in to her diet (at a restaurant, if something is cooked in the same pan with butter, it bothers her).  G/L!
  • Since we're still EBF...DD has nasty smelling, mucousy diapers that have flecks in them if I have more than a bit of butter on toast.  She also is crankier because she's got a lot of gas as well.  And she will actually poop out an extra diaper that's just mucous which is really gross.  And her skin gets pimply for a day or two.  It's not a pretty sight.
