Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Need some help... what might be the issue?

Sorry... I don't normally post on the weekends, but need some pointers here...

DD has been spitting up a lot since last night. She has never been a puker... This morning she was up at 4am which is unlike her, so I know something must be bothering her. She hasn't been super fussy today but seriously can't keep anything down. She is also refusing to eat solids today.

DH called the 24 hour ask a nurse and she was wasn't helpful at all. She suggested reflux - seriously, like the type of reflux that comes on in less than a couple hours?! She was fine all day yesterday...

ETA: DD doesn't have a fever.

What could be the issue? She is on Enfamil Gentlease. She seems to have an appetite but spits up after every feeding so far today (we are on outfit number 5 for her and number 3 for me). Also, is there anything you can give babies with tummy aches?Tongue Tied

  • Teething? It affects everything.

  • Could it be teething? They produce a lot of extra saliva when they're teething it sometimes causes them to throw up. Could be just a little bug too. NBD it happens.

  • DD did this for a few days a couple weeks ago.  We gave her pedialyte for a few hours until she was able to keep it down - just to make sure she didnt get dehydrated.  The instructions we had were to give her pedialyte a teaspoon at a time every 10 minutes for an hour.  Then 2 tsps every 10 minutes for another hour.  If she kept that down we were to try and feed her again (formula or BM).  If she vomited after the bottle we were to wait an hour and start over w/ the pedialyte. Hope that helps!

I'm not sure... I don't think so. She doesn't have any teeth yet and she isn't drooling or trying to nom on everything in sight. She does have her days when I think she is teething but today doesn't seem like one of those days.

I am thinking it is a little bug. Just hoping it gets better before tomorrow, I don't think I could send her to DC like this.

I really hope it is NBD!

  • I would keep an eye on it and if she is spitting up a LOT (more than a few oz) I would see the pedi.?

I am an "err on the side of caution" kind of gal on this issue because we went through something very like this, and ended up in the hospital for 6 days due to dehydration. It started as just more spit-up than normal and got progressively worse. We saw the pedi twice in 2 weeks and still ended up in the hospital.. their official diagnosis was stomach virus.?
    ?
    GL!?

Oh not good! I will keep an eye on it. She has never been like this before. She really has never spit up so when she has been today she just looks at me like "What just happened?" With scared little eyes. Ahh, I really hope it doesn't get worse!

That was the same story w/ DD.. she was never a "spitter-upper" and even the first few days of her doing it, she acted fine otherwise - she never ran a fever. Two things I will tell you to look out for are 1) curdled spit-up.. if it looks old (digested) call the pedi 2) if it's colored at all... by the time it had gotten bad w/ DD, the spit-up was orangish/red, and she wasn't on any purees at that time. The whole thing, from first spit-up to being in the hospital was 2 weeks. I never knew a virus could last so long. :(?

  • Sounds like a little bug to me.

  • i agree with others - this does sound like a virus. That said, it's not the end of the world.

Disinfect everything in sight, skip any solids for at lest a day till she can keep food down. Also - is it spit-up, or is it vomiting (forceful)? Watch how many wet diapers she makes. Often babies start having diarrhea right after vomiting / excessive spitup if it is of viral causes.

So, watch for signs of dehydration, if anything concerns you at all, call the pediatrician.

Did she have a fever at any time during that whole process?
