all our diapers were taken by the night time diaper fairy who left behind new underwear.
we had 2 accidents and not one accident since (if you don't count the regression from staying at my parents house for a week).
we still use night time diapers till she's been consistently dry (and even then it saves the sheets when she leaks a little)
but i've found that plain underwear is much easier for them to get up/down than cloth (or disposable) trainers. and my DD couldn't see that cloth trainers were any different from her regular diapers so she was happy to keep "using" them instead of the potty.

I personally think that the reason trainers didn't work for us was that they felt too much like a diaper. So we did panties and had a TON of them, and would bring at least two changes of panties and pants in the diaper bag. DD had accidents often for a while but was done w/ diapers, so we just dealt. She is doing REALLY well now, 5 months later.
