Mine is apparently not dilated nor effaced (both good, considering i'm 36 weeks) but it is "soft". I don't remember them using the world soft before? Is anyone else soft? Tell me about your cervixes (or is it cervices) ladies!!
I was checked today in L&D and was still 1cm dilated and about 50% effaced. I've been at this same stage since last Monday. They didn't say anything about being soft...

Technically I'm not suppose to know what my effacement would be (long story nobody would slog through... actually I probably wouldn't slog through it)
Anyhow at 32 weeks I was 25% effaced, which doesn't tell you crap about anything. I have an OB appointment tomorrow so we'll see if the choose to do an internal or not... Waiting for the Doc to tell me easy on horizontal polkas
I'm 1-1.5 cm dilated and about 30% effaced. My doctor was very happy with that because I have gestational diabetes and will most likely need an induction between 38 and 39 weeks. A softening and dilating cervix will make the induction process much more favorable.
Hmm...I don't know what softening is. I got checked at my last appointment and was told I was "thinning." Perhaps thats the same thing?
This might help:
Your cervix starts out the consistency of a cold stick of butter right
out of the refridgerator. It needs to soften up before it can thin out
(efface) and open up (dilate). A soft cervix is the consistency of a
warm or room temperature stick of butter, soft and pliable and more
favorable to stretch.

The OB didn't tell me if I am soft or effaced at all at my last internal. He did say that I am 1cm dilated. Thursday I will have another internal, so we will see than how/if things are progressing.
Wow! I can't believe how many of you are already dilating!
So I guess a soft cervix is step in the right direction. It's really weird to think about all these changes that little thing goes through. Also, I tend to refer to my cervix as "the drum" because that's what LO seems to think it is.
I had my first internal last week at 35wk5d and was 1cm dilated, 60%effaced and at a -2 station. My next appointment is Wednesday, I can't wait to see if I've made any progress in the last week.
Re: Let's talk about cervixes!
I wasn't technically 'soft' but was 'softening' so I'm not sure how to take that. But that was two weeks ago at 35 weeks.
I'll find out what's going on at my next appointment on Thursday.

My first internal is on Friday at 35 weeks and 5 days.

This is exactly what I was told at my appointment today, and I'm also 36 weeks!
