DS refuses to wear a jacket/hoodie

I got him a bunch of cute hoodies to wear this winter over his long sleeve shirts.  Well I put one on him Saturday and he fought me a little but was okay once I had it on and zipped.  Than I tried to put on one Sunday and he fought me again (crying, pulling away) but again was okay once it was zipped.  Well today I tried to put one on and he melted down.  Crying, pulling away, fell out on the bed to get away from it.  I couldn't even get one arm on. I don't understand??  He wore them all last year.  Each time it was a different jacket.  They are super soft and feel just like his sweatshirts that pull over his head (which he will wear).

Has anyone had this issue?  I went today and got a couple more pullovers so that he will at least be warm.  But they don't come with hoods and he refuses to keep a hat on his head.  He's going to be so cold this winter!!

Re: DS refuses to wear a jacket/hoodie

  • will he wear it if you pull it over his head instead of zipping it?

  • Try to give him a choice of two hoodies, he may be more willing to wear it if he get to pick it out.
  • Well, I'm a very pick-your-battles kind of mom so I would just let him know that if he is cold you have a sweatshirt for him and leave it at that.  Of course if you're going outside and it's 20 below that's a different story but for just around the house I would say it's his choice.  We go through this battle periodically with socks and I always feel like DS must be freezing without them on, but at the same time it's not truly hurting him so I just go with it.

  • For us that's not a battle worth fighting. DS wore a turtleneck and pullover sweatshirt whenever we went out last winter. I got the "he'll freeze" argument from the il's to which they were told they can dress him then (which they refused). I kept three nice warm blankets in the car and his hat. He never wore the hat until summer which was when he decided it was ok. He snuggled under blankets and took off/put on layers of them as needed. And it was his choice and no fights or stress on my part. Just another option for you. On the blustery days he would let us carry him with a blanket wrapped around him and cover his head with the blanket.

I'm definitely also a pick-your-battles mom.  We give him choices about pretty much everything so I think I'll go with letting him choose between 2 sweatshirts.  I'm a little concerned that he isn't old enough to understand that I have a jacket if he gets cold but I'm willing to try it.  It's also not as though we are outside for long so I don't think he'll freeze.

I think I'll go with Sapphyr's idea and keep blankets in the car for him to use as he wants.  And I'll also try zipping it and pulling it over his head since I plan on zipping it anyway.
