2nd Trimester

Weight gain question...

I am 23 weeks pregnant. I have gained almost 30lbs. I'm very nervous about it. I was 168lbs pregnancy. I am 5'8 and at 168lbs I was between a size 10 and 12. I suffered from an eating disorder before my pregnancy and have no problems with it since becoming pregnant. My little ones health comes before anything else. I indulge for in a treat here and there but am not eating junk food nonstop. I just feel like it just keep coming on faster and faster. I gained 15lbs the first trimester because I was sick to my stomach for 15 weeks but never threw up. So I was eating whatever made me feel better which was mostly pasta and mash potatoes.

Can someone put my mind at ease and tell me I'm not out of control. Its really bothering me because all I hear from people around me is how careful I should be because they gained a lot of weight during their pregnancy and struggled or didn't ever lose the weight. Should I be concerned enough to ask my doctor about it?

Re: Weight gain question...

  • First...did your dr. tell you that you gained that much weight?  Scales can be really off so I would definitely double check your scale.  I was up 20lbs at 22 weeks.  You could mention it to your dr. but don't panic.

  • I have a digital scale and I've monitored my won weight gain, so I've been weighing myself on the same scale since I became pregnant.

  • I gained a lot because of gestational diabetes. You might want to have your dr. double check if you haven't been tested already. Even if they say no, you might want to pretend you do and eat like you have it.
  • 2 weeks ago I went to the doctor's and I weighed 203... I went in a few days ago and weighed 210... I'm pretty tall (almost 5'10) so my weight has always evened out well.. Before I had babies I was 126 and skinny, tall, big boobs, nice butt... Then I had babies and boy did I shoot up. I know how it is to be struggling a little with the weight gain of pregnancy. You know what I was told at my last appointment though? "Think of it this way, you're eating healthy and still gaining weight, it's for the baby though!" It's not like we gorge ourselves with food. Some women gain more at different parts of their pregnancies too.... So you could have gained this 30lbs. so far but may start slowing down in a few weeks. And from experience (I gained 60lbs. with my first!) I know if doctor's are concerned with your weight, they will say something. Don't worry about it too much, you're working over time growing a perfect little baby!

  • Ditto PP about gaining at different rates. With my first, I had no weight gain until the last 3ish weeks, and hit about 30lbs in that time span. Talk about a shock! This time around I am going in "spurts." Nothing, then 5, then nothing, then 5... your doctor WILL let you know if they are concerned - but you should let them know if you are, too!

  • Been there done that and honestly, I would talk to your doctor to see about getting a referral to a nutritionist. I wish I had.

I gained 60 pounds with DD. I had always been very strict with myself as far as eating and exercise (I'm a personal trainer) and pregnancy was really the first time I allowed myself to eat whatever I wanted without thinking about it and I wasn't allowed to exercise due to previous miscarriages.  Like you, I gained a ton of weight in the first trimester because the only foods that made me feel better were bagels, pasta and chocolate.  Plus, I gave up Diet Coke and had a hard time getting water down so I drank a lot of juice, ginger ale, etc.  I did lose all of the weight, but it is something I never want to go through  again.  I was also lulled into a false sense of security by people telling me that BF'ing would take it all off.  Yeah, right!

You can't do anything about the weight you've already gained, but a nutritionist can help you devise a plan so that you aren't digging a deeper hole.  I spoke to one who works in my OB's office at the beginning of this pregnancy because I was worried about it happening again.  She said that if she had seen me during my last pregnancy, she would have advised me to gain less than the standard one pound a week in the 2nd and 3rd tri, because let's face it, I had already gained more than the required maternal fat stores which are usually gained during those trimesters.

  • The first thing that came to mind is that possibly your metabolism is messed up due to your eating disorder.

Either way I do think you should mention your concern to your doctor and she what they have to say. Good luck and try not to stress out too much especially since you said you are eating healthy foods!

  • I gained 40 at 30 weeks but was tiny pre preg....88lbs at 5'4.... so now i am 128. From what I understand it's ok as long as you don't go over what's recommended for a pregnant person at your height. For example. I will probably gain about 60lbs realistically at the end of it all, but that would put me at 148 at 5'4 pregnant which I guess is ok...
  • Try not to stress--I am in a similar situation and it occupies much of my thoughts. I am just continuing to eat healthfully, walk/run and hope for the best. I am being tested early for GD as well. Be kind to yourself--even Kate Hudson gained 60 pounds when she was pregnant! I wish I could have been the skinny Mom with the bump only but don't think it's in the cards for me.
  • I had the same thing last pg....horrible m/s and only thing that helped was snacking.  I gained 37 lbs total.  I was up about 20lbs by week 20 and then the last 17 in the remaining weeks - mostly it was water gain.  Just try to eat better (more veggies/protein then carbs) and walk/exercise and do what you can.  I work with a girl who gained 70 (with a singleton) and lost it all plus some.  I think the 20lbs is a good goal - but not realistic for all.

  • I've put on 23 pounds so far.  I'm not worried at all since it's been steady and my doc has said nothing.  I eat all the time (and a ton of calories, both healthy and crap) but I walk and feel good!  I gained 60 pounds with my first and lost 70 pounds by the time he was 5 months old by going back to my regular eating habits and working out (and exclusively BF).  I wouldn't worry too much!
  • I would imagine your ob would say something when they weight you in at your apt if they are concerned, but you may want to bring it up yourself. It is possible you have GD and they can test you early it doesn't hurt to check- the sooner you know the better in case you need to change your diet to adhere to GD. If you dont your ob may just give you a goal of weight gain for the remainder of your pregnancy if they are concerned.

Good to know :) TY TY TY

  • Are you working out. I have worked out throughout my pregnancy and I am right on track or at least that is what my Dr is saying I am 21 weeks and 1 day and have gained about 10-12 pounds.  I even worked out the first trimester when I was feeling sick which actually made me feel a little better. My diet hasn't been the best to be honest but it hasn't been horrible either. If you aren't working out try to start it may help you.
