Everyone's doing Isla. I just like the English version. BTW, Ireland wouldn't work at all. I'm not "European" and don't even come close to looking like I am, lol.

I just threw the "Y" in as an alternate spelling, not really serious about it.

Island is better than Islynd, but its still kind of wired. Why do you like this? Did you and DH share special memories on an island? I can see naming a child after an island that you and DH have fond memories of (for example Kauai) but just plain Island is kind of generic. Know what I mean?

Thanks for the not so negative response. Yes, my DH and I were married on an Island. It was our most happiest memory. As a matter of fact, our dream is to one day move to an island. We love listening to reggae and kicking back in a hammock or on the beach. Her name would fit the lifestyle and philosophy she grows up in. My mothers name is Lillian so Lily would pay tribute to her as well as fit in with the "natural" theme of the 1st name. I just don't see much significance in the "run of the mill, generic" names. No offense to others.

Jamaica just won't work for me. That's kind of like naming her Ireland in the pp. I guess if I like it and my DH likes it, that settles it. Plus, we could do a lot worse like a lot of the names I've seen on here lately!

I don't really like "Island" and as a PP pointed out, it's just generic if you're fond of a particular island- Jamaica. What about naming her after a place in Jamaica then?

Such as-

Hope (for Hope Bay)

May (for May Pen)

Christiana (for Christiana)

Lucia (for Lucea)

Ann (for St. Ann)

Rose (for Rose Hall)

Elizabeth (for St. Elizabeth)

Savannah (for Savanna-la-Mar)

Or a Jamaican name? I kinda like these two names from the "Top 10 Jamaican Baby names"-

Yes, sure, in the end, you and Dh can do whatever you want. but realize that if we all don't like it, it's a good indicator of what most people's reaction IRL will be too. They may not say it to your face, but I can guarentee you that behind your back, most people will be giving you all the major side-eye.

Some thoughts on these names...

1) Islynd is terrible, so I'd ditch it, so posters can take the first name more seriously.

2) I prefer Lily to Lilly - Lilly looks like silly, while Lily is all flower to me.

3) I can see the appeal of island because of the name, isla

4) My parents were married in Jamaica (St. Thomas), so I do think there are other options within the island than the generic word

5) I see this as a middle name rather than a first name

6) Noun names are tricky, but place names are tougher - any middle name on a place name looks like something the media would create for someone notorious. Example...a prostitute could be called Island Marie or a bank robber could be Austin Michael...see what I mean?

While I appreciate you coming back and responding instead of the usual, post and run, this crosses the line. Yes, we've named our babies and they're off limits - we can talk about names in general, but to point out someone's child...this borders on troll behavior, and I'd suggest not doing this ever again.

My DH has a cousin named Breanna nn Breezy. Breezy feels like it would fit in with the feeling you're going for. And I think you could probably use any Br- name and use that nn. Breanne, Breanna, Briony, Brittany, Brenna, Bree, Brinley, Brieta, etc.

I'm sure you may know, a name is not attached to any single child. I gave you an example of how any name could be used in a negative way. I agree, your baby may be off limits but the name Sophie is not. Reread the post if you're unsure. I did not point out your child, I pointed out the name Sophie/ Sofa! If you don't like it, DON'T CONTINUE TO READ MY POST!

My DH has a cousin named Breanna nn Breezy. Breezy feels like it would fit in with the feeling you're going for. And I think you could probably use any Br- name and use that nn. Breanne, Breanna, Briony, Brittany, Brenna, Bree, Brinley, Brieta, etc.
