Yeah, I guess Sophie's real original.... Sofa.  One can make any name horrible.

While I appreciate you coming back and responding instead of the usual, post and run, this crosses the line. Yes, we've named our babies and they're off limits - we can talk about names in general, but to point out someone's child...this borders on troll behavior, and I'd suggest not doing this ever again.

I'm sure you may know, a name is not attached to any single child.  I gave you an example of how any name could be used in a negative way.  I agree, your baby may be off limits but the name Sophie is not.  Reread the post if you're unsure.  I did not point out your child, I pointed out the name Sophie/ Sofa!  If you don't like it,  DON'T CONTINUE TO READ MY POST!

Your comment about Sophie was directed at Sunny's daughter. BraveAngel is wise, you should listen to her instead being a whiny brat.

    A name stops no one.

Actually here's a study proving you wrong:

    https://www.stlouisfed.org/publications/re/articles/?id=339

Basically to save you the trouble of reading, if you have an "ethnic" sounding name you're less likely to get hired.  So by giving your child a crappy name you're limiting her opportunities in life

But you're right.  You and DH's love of tropical breezes should definitely trump everything else (including common sense and spelling)

  • I'm going to have to say that I actually really like the name. I love word names, though I've never considered Island before and probably never would. I think it works in this case only because you've chosen the middle name Lily, which keeps the word Island firmly entrenched in the tropical arena, rather than giving it a stripper-esque quality.

However, your attitude is appalling. That you came onto a public message board and asked for opinions, became defensive when those same opinions weren't filled with glowing praise for your own brilliance, and then lashed out at a long-standing board member . . . choosing of all things to make fun of the perfectly lovely (and normal) name she chose for her daughter is childish beyond belief.

Are you certain you're mature enough to have a child? With an attitude like yours and behavior of such sterling caliber, it's not hard to imagine you hitting your child back and screaming "na-ni-na-ni-boo-boo" at the top of your lungs.

But good luck with your pregnancy and your delivery. May she be beautiful and healthy and a whole hell-of-a-lot more polite than you are.

  • I dislike the name, not my style.

But you aren't looking for opinions it seems. You want validation that your name is so wonderful and unique.

  • Island (spelled this way) is not that terrible, imo. It is appealing to the ears. That said, I do think it would be better off as a middle name. If you are going to use it no matter what then please consider the real spelling. Adding a y just looks bad. Really bad.

What about Lily Island? Or Lily Jamaica?

Not cool. At least baby Sophie can do whatever she wants in life. Adult Island is pretty much limited to stripper, tour guide, or cantina bar tender.

    Thanks for the defense :)

  • As I see, others have high jacked this tread; this has become nothing more than a "pile on".  All one needs to do is look at the pp to see that people who have given me "constructive" criticisms have been responded to in a positive and appreciative fashion.  However, those who have been entirely negative and condescending, as if the mere idea of giving a child this name, is somehow ridiculous and idiotic, have been met with the same low level behavior.  To that, I can say, I was wrong. I am much too positive a person to have responded to the "bait" technique.  Maybe it?s the hormones; maybe I just fell into the trap of becoming entertainment to some bored housewife.  Either way, there's no excuse.  Thank you to the people who didn't like the name, but also didn't take the opportunity to try to make another person feel like thinking outside of the box was somehow asinine.  Also, thanks to those of you who didn't think it was so bad.Smile

  • I think Island is a perfect name for your child!
  • I'll respond because you posted on a public message board... I mean, seriously, you aren't going to get realistic reactions if you try and limit the opinions you get to a specific group of people.

I don't think I could ever take the name Island seriously, especially if you misspelled it. Names DO limit people, and although people aren't going to tell you to your face that the name sucks, they are thinking it and they will laugh once they walk away. You'll get the occasional person who genuinely likes it, but they will be few and far between.

I can appreciate the sentimental value of the name, however it is just not very good. There must be other ways for you to capture how special islands and Jamaica are to you, and I think most of us would be happy to help you figure that out.

    Aren't all names "nouns"?

Names are "Proper" nouns.  When you use the single word "noun" it is assumed that one is speaking of a common noun.  "noun" names suggest names such as Sky.  Hope this clears it up for you.

I realize they are proper nouns, but I assumed that because you cannot spell Island you would have no idea what I was talking about.

Next lesson-  There is no proper way to spell a proper noun, hence the alternate spelling.

Yes... there are proper ways to spell nouns. If there wasn't specific ways to spell things, we'd never be able to read everything people wrote because there would be so many interpretations. Thats why there are spelling rules and things like the dictionary.

    I like you.

I also like that someone else noticed "honest" and "rude" are two different things. :)

  • the thing i like about noun names is that they're not generally heard as names for people but are recognizable and therefore easy to spell/ pronounce. for that reason, you should always use the correct spelling as your child is already going to have a less common name.

i'm not a fan of first names or nicknames as middle names because they seem so informal to me so i wouldn't put lily in that spot but out of the two, the correct spelling of island and lily without the extra L is the only acceptable choice imo. i also don't like lily with it because they are both word names. i like a word name paired with a more traditional non-word name.

if you're open to ideas other than island, you might think of things that would give her more options than just the one name and can still incorporate a word name like you want. for example:

my daughter's nickname [which we plan to call her] is bay, which obviously is a noun, but it is short for a not-so-common actual given name because i wanted her to have more than one choice in case she doesn't like bay.

alternatively, you could go with island and call her isla as a nickname. just PLEASE don't misspell island.

  • OK, responses to this thread have me dying.  Yes, Island is definitely NMS, to put it kindly.

OP: Another thing to consider - what about a name like Irie?  It's a Rasta concept and it will convey all those things you and your DH love about Jamaica and island life, without being TOO bizarre.  I think Irie Lillian is beautiful, and it would give your daughter the option of a more traditional name to fall back on one day should she not like the more informal first name you chose for her.

  • WTF!?! I'm not here for half a day and AGAIN miss out on the interesting threads, and wow lots of people I have never seen posting today. Must be something in the water.

My response to the name Island, could be worse, I personally hate it, while I understand the signifigance to you. You, OP can continue to love it and dance around with your puppies and rainbows. Did you HONESTLY think it would go over well?

You were just looking to start something and then you attack a regular's CHILD? Sure shows some outstanding upbringing and couth on your part.

In the future don't ask for opinions and then put stipulations on those OPINIONS, if you love the name so much YOU wouldn't have taken so much offense to the replies that didn't agree with your name choice.
