Politically Incorrect Words - Do you use them?

I am not going to lie; I often use politically incorrect words and/or phrases.  Never in a professional setting, but I do in casual settings.  Do you use politically incorrect words and/or phrases?

Do politically incorrect words and/or phrases offend you?

**** I am referring to words like gay, retarded, etc - not racial slurs.

Re: Politically Incorrect Words - Do you use them?

  • Not much offends me.  If someone uses a word that has been deemed politically incorrect, I am not going to sit there and yell at them.  Their choice, their life.

  • i dont. Just my preference. But when people say things like "she is so retarded"... it really rubs me the wrong way.
  • I fail to see how "gay" or "retard" is somehow less awful than a racial slur.

No, I would never use these words to imply something negative.

  • Never really used to bother me, but now as I'm becoming more pregnant and what not, and because of my horrible NT scan I don't really like to make fun of people or have others do it around me.

  • I'm not easily offended and H and I use words around the house that we don't use in public. Mostly from movie quotes etc. We don't just go around calling each other gay retards for the hell of it.

But I do tell him to stop being a Reh-tard sometimes from the movie The Hangover and stuff like that.

While I'm not easily offended, I do not use these words. Now I'm not going to lie  and say that I didn't laugh  at certain parts of The Hangover, but I do get upset when people use "retard". My DH has an aunt that is mentally challenged and it just hits a nerve when people reffer to her as "retarded".

I make an effort to never use these words, I can't imagine how I would feel if  my child picked that up from me! Now I just have to watch those F-U bombs!Embarrassed

See, I don't quite understand this thinking. I'm not attacking you, I just don't understand.

"Retarded" bothers you because your child has autism.

Well, someone else's child is gay. So clearly, any of the various "non PC" uses of that word would be hurtful to them. The same for any other slur we might be talking about here.

Just because a slur doesn't directly affect you doesn't mean you shouldn't realize how it would affect others. And that should be all the incentive necessary not to use it.

I'm not insanely sensitive or anything, but I never want to offend people at the core of who they are. I would be horrified to do so.

If I'm on the phone with a friend and one of uses that word to describe something it doesn't phase me at all especially if you take into consideration the actual dictionary definition of the word.

  • I grew up in MA and we constantly used gay and retarded when we were younger.  I don't use retarded anymore but my sisters and I will sometimes say "you're so freaking gay!" to each other once in a while when we think the person is annoying.  I wouldn't use it around other people.  We laugh about it as we realize how horrible it sounds. We are all professionals with masters degrees- I think it just makes us laugh and remember a different time.

  • Honestly, and it's a really bad habit of mine, I say "Gay!" or "That's so gay!" when something goes a way I'm not expecting it I guess. It's to the point where I don't even realize I'm saying it until I've said it.

I by no means am referring to homosexual individuals, and I don't mean it as derogatory because it's said in the tone of "Well that was unexpected!" which in the way I understand the meaning of the word "gay" in general (when not meaning happy) means "different" so maybe it makes sense? even though "homo" means "same" so it's actually the opposite... maybe I'm just rambling (I seem to be doing that a lot today).

Regardless, I am admitting to saying it. It's a problem. My bff yelled at me for it once because I said "Gay!" as an exclamation when I noticed there was no cinnamon on the table at Starbucks (or something along those lines) when I was visiting her in NY... I think it's actually regional slang maybe which is the only reason she noticed and I would think nothing of it.

One of my best friends is homosexual and has never taken offense to or mentioned at all anything when I've used it as an exclamation -- he says it too, but he's from where I'm from.

ETA: I'd also like to add that specifically the word "retard" is not always politically incorrect because it depends on context... though I think the only acceptable context to use the word in is when referring to music. NEVER would I use it in describing a person, but if I'm literally referring to something as slowed down (thing not one) then technically to say it's retarded is correct.

I try not to in any case though because most people aren't going to stop and think "oh she must mean the literal sense of the word" and will be offended.

  • I do. I don't get offended by it all.  The bump has gotten me to notice how it really offends people.
  • I won't lie that I have used terms such as these in the past! But we don't say ANYTHING around our boys that we wouldn't want them to say in front of friends, family or random strangers. They are definitely little sponges and will repeat:) For example, we have a same sex couple as neighbors and I would NOT want my boys saying "that's gay" in front of them because they are awesome guys! I would be horrified.

I think sometimes groups of friends use different slang words or politically incorrect words and it sorta desensitizes you to what you are actually saying. So I don't judge or think badly of people who slip out something occasionally. I think it can just be from a bad habit!

  • I was a social worker for children with disabilities and i also have a gay brother so no i do not use them and i don't like to hear them.  I know most people don't mean anything negative by them but words still have meaning.

When I wrote those two as an example I did not really think someone would be as pretentious to have issues with it. Had I written slang for homosexuals or mental interdicts that would have included more words than I intended.

  • Do you use politically incorrect words and/or phrases?

    Occasionally.

Do politically incorrect words and/or phrases offend you?

No. At least not the ones mentioned in OP. My best friend is gay refers to things as gay on occasion. I have to say, I don't get why being gay or having a gay friend/kid/other or being directly tied to someone with mental disabilities automatically means you have to be offended by those terms. Not the case with me nor with many people I know personally. Meh.

Edited to add. They're still sensitive terms and I agree that it's immature to use sensitive terms freely just because someone is personally not offended by them. But I honestly don't think we have anyone like that here.
