Need encouragement... pumping mamas, come in!

I love BFing, still.  So does Briley, she would not take a bottle from me the other night when I tried.  BUT... I am SO tired of pumping at work.  I had a goal that Briley would never get formula, and I would still like to do that.  I have posted before that work has not exactly been helpful with pumping, and since I work 12 hour shifts I have to pump 3x/day at work.  I am now on light duty, and my light duty assignment actually makes it more difficult to go pump without getting someone to cover for me.  Also I am having a hard time pumping as much as she is eating.  I think that weaning at this point would be a nightmare because Briley would hate it, and I still want to BF on my days off, so I guess I just need some encouragement to keep going.  Five and a half more months seems like a really long time!  TIA.

  • YOU CAN DO IT!!!! :) I pumped 12+ months in less then ideal conditions myself 3 times a day - I cannot tell you how many times something would fall into the toilet,  whether it be a cap to the milk or the pumps tubing, and it took a lot not to break down and cry about it ;) You'll get through it!

  • I know you've posted about difficulties pumping at work, but I thought by law your employer had to give you a place & time to pump?

    Good luck!

Once I had to pump in the restroom of DFW airport.  It was awful.  I don't know how you did it for that long.  Way to go!

It's too bad pumping isn't easier.

  • I also want to add that should you decide to stop pumping, BFing on your days off/ when you are home is still possible. For two months now I have been BF on my three days off with Alexa and then in the evenings during the week and I've had no problems retaining the milk I need for just those times. I also don't get uncomfortable during the day now that I don't pump - not sure how mother nature works so well, but it does :)

  • I am not a working pumper BUT I know that you can do it!!!  You have lasted this long, what's another 5.5 months!?!  You're rockin the pumping on the job!  Someone told me when I was having issues to give it one more week, and re-evaluate.  Maybe today/last night/yesterday was just more rough than usual and it will get better again.

FWIW, if you have to give B formula on working days for peice of mind, don't stress out.  I know another mama who does this with her 9 month old, formula on working days and BFing at night/morning and days off.  It works for her (and Kim says it works too!), I bet it will work for you too.

IMO, your work sucks for not being more supportive about your pumping.  You work in an effing hospital!  If anyone were to support BFing, it should be them.  I am so angry for you.

    +1 to all of this!

I'm sorry you're having such a hard time. Give it a week or two then reassess. I hope you can work something out!

I am frustrated about that too... Especially since our hospital got a "Family Friendly" recognition for creating a pumping room for employees. But I would have to get someone to watch my assignment to go to the 4th floor. When I said something to our director, she didn't know anything about it, and wanted to know why was it so special that I wanted to use it?

Thanks for all the encouragement ladies!
