she tried for both my sister and I, but only made it a couple weeks due to nipple pain. I guess she didn't have a very good support network to show her a proper latch.

I was only BF for 2 weeks b/c my mom got really ill and not only was her medication unsafe for her to take while BFing, but it caused her to dry up. She really tried to and is still bummed she couldnt. MIL however, nursed all 4 of hers, her youngest until she was 3.

no one in my immediate or extended family has breastfed. not my mom, not her mom, none of my aunts. My sister didn't. My SIL did BF each of her 3 DDs but not for longer than a week I think. MIL didn't BF any of her kids. I did not BF my DD1. But I am going to BF DD2 exclusively if I can.

It's going to be weird..NO one in my family has seen or known a woman who has breastfed. I'm going to be the first and I'm hopful that I won't be the last. I fully intend to be public about my BFing in hopes of encouraging other family members to try it.

No....my mom tried to but she said I wanted to nurse constantly, which made her think that she didn't have enough milk. :-( She didn't have any bf support, so didn't know that babies do this sometimes. She's so proud that I've nursed DS for so long; she's really supportive.

Both my mom and Dh's mom breastfed all of their kids from what i know for varying amounts of time. My mom went back to work during my first year and they didn't have good pumps, and then they gave me buttermilk as I was apparently intolerant of regular (cow) milk in my bottle. Yuck!

I was impressed though- I had a breastfeeding status on my fb- and my dad wrote " we are glad that we didn't listen when the doctor told us to stop nursing you and give you formula"

I was breastfed until I was 3 (and get teased about that quite frequently by friends and DH!). My mom had been done for awhile, but my dad was actually the one who pushed self-weaning, so she kept at it. Finally one night she'd had enough and cut me off cold-turkey. I still remember the night. We bedshared and I can remember lying next to her and not being able to nurse. She said I whined a little, rolled over and went to sleep, and never asked for it again.

Nope - I was FF. My mom never even tried to BF. And though my mom is supportive of me BFing, you can tell she doesn't understand my devotion to it. I've nursed through several plugged ducts, even in front of her a couple of times, and she flat out said she didn't get why I was still nursing when it hurt so bad.

DH and SIL were BF though - MIL is a bit of a hippy.
