Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

I know this is probably controversial topic.....

Are you getting your LO vaccinated against the flu?

If not, are you using other supplements to boost LO's immune system?

  • Yes she got it at her 18month appt.
  • Yes our whole family will get the flu shot.
  • Yep this year she will. She's in a parent's day out program and we have a little guy at home too. Last year both of those factors didnt exist so she didnt get one.

  • Yes, he will get both flu shots next week. I am worried about the Swine flu especially after last winter's pandemic...One less cold/thing to worry about, hopefully...

I do make sure he eats very healthy and gives vitamins if I feel he has a day where he is not getting all of his nutients from food ...

  • Yes, the boys get theirs on the 11th.
  • Yes we will be getting the shot.
  • DS and I will get the flu shot next week.
  • No one in our house gets the flu shot. DS breastfeeds.

  • This year she will be because she's only nursing 1-2 times per day. Last year she was nursing a lot more, so she did not.

  • My family has never had flu shots this year as until now I felt the risks outweigh the benefits.  But after a nasty bout of RSV last year my older daughter developed viral induced asthma so we will all get flu shots since she is at serious risk of hospitalization if she gets the flu.

  • Yep DS#1 and us will all be getting the shot. Last year I had the regular and H1N1 flu and I exposed my family to it. If he had gotten it I would have felt so bad. This year I am not taking chances (especially since we have a 4 month old that can't get the shot).

    This.
  • DH got it and I will get it.  I haven't made a final decision whether to get it for B.  He does nurse 3 to 4x a day so I'm leaning towards no.

Triddo...or is it Thriddo? Anyway, yes.

  • Ok - serious question and I'm not trying to be snarky: Does BFing a few times a day really protect your child from the flu? Don't you have to pass on the antibodies for it to be beneficial? And wouldn't you either need to get the vaccine or actually have the flu to generate the antibodies.

I do BF and am very pro BF but I just don't want anyone to think BFing is complete protection against flu. Although DD never got the flu, she did get sick more than a few times last winter and has already had a cold this season.

  • No, he's never gotten one and I don't plan on getting him or his sister one.

Word.  The "we breastfeed, so no flu shot" responses have me scratching my head.  While it does confer some additional protection to your LO, the best way to protect him/her would be to breastfeed AND get a flu shot AND make sure all caregivers get flu shots.
