Ok - serious question and I'm not trying to be snarky: Does BFing a few times a day really protect your child from the flu? Don't you have to pass on the antibodies for it to be beneficial? And wouldn't you either need to get the vaccine or actually have the flu to generate the antibodies.
I do BF and am very pro BF but I just don't want anyone to think BFing is complete protection against flu. Although DD never got the flu, she did get sick more than a few times last winter and has already had a cold this season.
we normally would, but the ped advised against it due to his egg allergy. His egg reaction is a body rash that doesnt seem to bother him, so IDK if i will get it at the allergist or not...i have to see what they say. I may start to give him a poly-v since it is the fall/winter season.

DH will probably get his this weekend and DS & I will get ours on Tuesday. I never got the flu shot until I got pg, but now I don't see a reason not to. (I didn't before because I'm scared of needles.)

Does anyone have some good websites where I can get unbiased information on both side? I am really trying to educate myself on the best choice for me and my family but most sites I have come across are very biased as to "why" or "why not" the vaccine should be taken.
No one in our household has ever had a flu shot. Somehow DD made it through 12 years of life w/o getting the flu. And I can't rememer the last time DH or I had it.
I don't understand why someone wouldn't get a flu shot. I am required to get one for work. Kiddo will get one - he has an egg allergy though so it is a bit more complicated.
We got DS vaccinated last year w/the regular seasonal flu and H1N1. DH and I only managed to get vaccinated against H1N1, but we still ended up with what was likely one of the regular seasonal flu strains.
After that absolutely miserable experience, we're not taking any chances.
If she gets the flu shot, it will be after we go to see an allergist to check for egg allergy. Her doctor won't give it to her unless we can prove she isn't allergic. And yet he hasn't given us the referral for the allergist yet....

Yes, he will get one at his 15 month appointment. The benefit would be that it will give him that extra ounce of prevention against illness this year. He is in daycare, so I will take any help I can get. Additionally, the shots at my pedi's office are preservative free.
I am not really sure what the benefits of not getting it would be.

I think you're going to have a problem with this because, aside from egg allergies or specific individual problems, you're not going to find any good science on the anti-vaccine side. It's like saying "I'd like to find an unbiased site with information on both sides of the 'Is the Earth round?'" You might find websites arguing that the Earth is flat, but that's not going to really help you.
I think this is a pretty good overview site from a reputable source:
No one in our house gets the flu shot. DS breastfeeds.
This.
How is that relevant? BFing doesn't protect you or your LO from the flu. I still breastfeed and DS had stomach flu.
The original questions were 1) Are you getting LO a flu shot and 2) What are you doing to boost LO's immune system. Nobody has said that BF will prevent LO from getting the flu. It will, however, boost his immune system, which is what was asked.
Yes, we will as soon as it is available. Just because you are breastfeeding doesn't make you immune. Last year my daughter was breastfed and still ended up hospitalized for 5 days with the flu. (FYI) She wasn't old enough for the flu shot last year.

Already got DD her first dose, second one if a few weeks. Our ped office has the preservative free version for the little ones, so it requires two doses. I am required to get it, and I am making DH get it as well.
DD had the flu last February (too young to get the shot + traveling/airport). She ended up in the hospital for at least a week. It was scary, and not something I ever want to go through again. I don't understand why anyone who has a little one in the house wouldn't get the vaccine, breastfeeding or not.

For me, I've always still gotten the flu the few years I actually got the flu shot. They guess as to what flues are coming over and they were way wrong on the last one I took. So, I stopped taking them. I've worked in schools for 12 years, so I'm pretty much immune to most common flues since I got them years ago, so the kids get my immunities through my breast milk. I haven't had the flu in a really long time.
To me, it's not really worth injecting myself with it. Now, my elderly mother who has a compromised system, she needs it. Me and my healthy family? They will be fine. My doc seems to agree.
No one in our household has ever had a flu shot. Somehow DD made it through 12 years of life w/o getting the flu. And I can't rememer the last time DH or I had it.
Last year was the first time in my life I received the flu shot. I am a kindergarten teacher and having a 1 month old infant at home worried me' so I got the shot.
Tahlia is being offered the flu shot this yearand I am somewhat uncomfortable with her getting it. I am provided a free flu shot through school and would rather get one myself than have her receive one. Although I am nervous because she is in daycare.
If you don't mind me asking, what are your personal reasons for not getting one?
Yep, she got her flu shot yesterday, will be getting the booster in a month. DH got his yesterday as well. I will be getting mine in a few weeks when I have my yearly checkup.
I don't think anyone believes that breastfeeding = immunity. But breastfeeding is quite a powerful form of defense against illnesses, even those that mom had as a child.
I just don't have a strong opinion one way or the other for the flu vaccine. I've only gotten it once in my life and have fared pretty well against it over the past 31 years. I will not be getting it this year either. I'm a big believer in building a strong immune system naturally and I think there can be harm in not allowing your body to exercise its immune system enough. That being said, we haven't made the flu vaccine for DD decision - we need to have the conversation with her pedi first. (And FTR, I am not anti-vaccine at all - DD will eventually receive all her vaccines, except flu and rotovirus).
We're all getting it. DH spent years manufacturing the flu vaccine and with his level of knowledge of it we're very comfortable getting them for ourselves and our boys.

No one in my home has gotten the flu since before DD was born at least. That's 38 unecessary vaccines over the years. :shrugs:

Yeah, I know what you mean. I haven't been in an accident since I got my license. That's 18 years of unnecessary seatbelt wearing. And don't get me started on the unnecessary car seat buying! ::shrugs::
We won't be getting a flu shot. DD is our only child and I am a SAHM so we chose not to this year.
Some people don't feel comfortable with some of the chemicals and side effects associated with the shot, and if they are at a low risk of actually getting the flu, would choose to forego the shot for their child. I do get how this would be hard to understand if you don't fall into this category of people.
I do like the Dr. Sears Vaccine Book, because while it seems like he's generally for doing the AAP recommended schedule, he does understand why someone would choose not to, and has recommendations of an alternative schedule (fully vaxed) and a selective schedule (only most important vaxs), and lists them in order of importance based on how common the disease is, how severe it can be, etc. There is a specific chapter on the flu shot. It tells about side effects, makeup of each brand of shot, how common it is, etc. It's a good tool to use to make your decision IMO, whichever way you decide. I would get it out from the library and read if I were you.

the flu shot is NOT on par w/ wearing safety belts or getting a car seat. flu shots aren't mandatory by law. you will not get a ticket if you don't get a flu shot. now your local PD WILL ticket you if you don't buckle up or worse, if you choose NOT to buckle your lo in a car seat.
fwiw, getting the flu shot is NOT a guarantee that you won't get the flu. you can still get the flu even IF you get a flu shot.

It's an anecdote, nothing more, nothing less. I don't use my past freedom from accidents to lead to my future behavior of not wearing a seatbelt.

Most likely if I get the flu, I will feel like crap for a few days. Most likely if I don;t wear a seatbelt and get into a car accident, the effects will be much worse.
Or I could die from the flu on the way to the ER while wearing my seatbelt.
She asked my reason. I don't feel it's necessary for my family. Have the PD come by and write and me a ticket.
