Tips/toy recs for flying with a toddler

We've taken Jake to FL and the D.R. when he was younger (11 weeks and 6 months). He wasn't at all mobile on either flight and I was nursing him exclusively both times, so I just nursed him he ended up sleeping almost all flights entirely. When he was awake he was content just sitting on our laps.  Well, now he's 14 months old, walking and VERY active.  He has absolutely no interest in TV/DVD's so that's not an option.  We'll bring plenty of fun snacks for him and I bought a magna doodle so he can draw on the plane- I'm thinking he's probably too little but I don't want to bring anything with a lot of pieces- he's also really into throwing things.  I'll also bring books since he loves them.  Any other tips or toy ideas? It's incredibly hard to find something that will keep Jake entertained and not annoy all the people around us ;)   I'm looking forward to this vacation but not the flight getting there!!! Oye!

  • gate check the carseat just in case there's an extra seat to lock him in, I mean, carefully secure him. ;-) You won't know until you board, but tell the gate agent when you get there that they are pretty/handsome and beg for an empty seat ;-)

the cup o' ice is a hit with us, and we bring the itouch loaded up with movies b/c it's smaller and easier to hold. (we actually keep it in the case to prevent her grubbers from pressing buttons. plus it muffles the sound.

Don't worry about annoying other people, you'll never see them again. It's a hard age, I'm not going to lie. Best moments ever were when Ava would accept her paci and nap.

I also put treats in lil' easter eggs and keep those handy. And Reems had the great idea to make edible necklaces.

I'm sure you did not buy him a seat.......but that would be my #1 tip. He sounds a lot like my DS1. We traveled with him at 16 months one time and I'm sorry to say it was the worst flight ever. We said that after that we were getting his own seat (the next time we flew he was over 2, so we didn't have a choice.....but we learned our lesson.....)

My IL's are taking us all on a trip in the summer and DS2 will be 17 months. My MIL was talking about how it would be a great time to go b/c DS2 would still be free. The flight is going to be about 4.5 hours. DH told her we aren't going unless they pay for a seat for him....LOL!

  • If it is a long flight, I absolutely agree to get him a seat if you can.

The tricky thing at this age is that if they aren't nursing or on a bottle, making sure they are drinking something during takeoff and landing.

We use the Horizon milk boxes.

Skittles, M and Ms, all kinds of candy (one day of sweet won't kill my baby, right) comes in handy.

We usually try and color (bring a clip board) bring I Spy type books, and stickers.

We aim to sit in the back row of the plane, the flight attendants hang out there and do a great job of providing entertainment sometimes.  Also, it gives you a place to pop up and stand.
