Natural Birth

Stereotypes - GTKY

A thread over on 2nd tri last week got me thinking - a lot of ppl hold stereotypes regarding those who choose natural birth. So, in order to help dispell some of those stereotypes (although, those who hold them probably aren't reading this), I'd like to get to know some of you better. Feel free to answer all or some or none of these questions, and add anything you'd like.

How old are you?

Where do you live (urban/rural)?

What is your marital status (married, in a relationship, single, etc.)?

How many kids do you already have (if any)?

What is your level of education?

What is your job (SAHM counts too!)?

And if you'd like, what are your religious/political leanings?

i do too.  however, i do know there is this huge movement among ultra-chirstian conservatives that is moving towards natural birth, BFing, local food buying.  from the very limited interactions i've had with them (a few acquaintances) it's very much due to the lack of trust in the government (and down right conspiracy theories a la "zomg they will take my child's dna at the hospital and try to TRACK ME!") and institutionalized medicine in general.

  • FWIW I definitely don't think I fit the stereotype. Everyone I know has had a hospital birth (as will I) and either had an epidural or would have if able to. I'm absolutely the odd one here for not wanting to use pain meds, I can only imagine the criticism I'd face if I wanted a home birth too.Edit: I want to add, I don't consider myself "granola" or "crunchy" or whatever people call themselves. And I don't think anyone in my family, social circle, or professional circle are either. I didn't make my choice to attempt a med-free birth because of a lifestyle choice, but more of a personal challenge to myself.  How old are you?  29Where do you live (urban/rural)? And if you'd like, what are your religious/political leanings?  christian (methodist), liberal conservative (i'm pretty conservative but i have a lot of liberal beliefs).

i've only just started to be more aware of natural alternatives like organic foods & natural remedies. i'm not really very granola, but when it comes to things that can be handled naturally i would rather do it that way. i wouldn't have considered myself to be the stereotypical natural birther, but people call me hippie since i've gotten PG & started using things like natural bug spray. funny, the main reason i decided to even look into natural birth is because i'm TERRIFIED of needles, all the other benefits were more like a bonus.

  • Nice to get to know you ladies! FWIW, I use resuable bags, don't let my car idle and try to drive efficiently (I can't say I have a fuel efficient car), recycle everything and would have a compost if I could and hope to cloth diaper, but I wouldn't say I fit what I thought the stereotype was. I have a professional degree, make good money, live in a new house, drive a SUV and enjoy my material possessions and spending an extravagent amount of money on, say, a bottle of wine or a nice pair of shoes once in a while (Embarrassed). I thought that kind of put me outside of the stereotype.

What is your job (SAHM counts too!)? Designer.  Switching back to Education next year.

And if you'd like, what are your religious/political leanings? Somewhat religious.  Thinking about becoming Catholic like DH...  VERY liberal/crunchy/granola. :-)

I've copied this because this is also how we do things!  "ETA: I think I mostly fit the crunchy mom stereotype - cloth diapering, baby wearing, local/organic food buying, co-sleeping, no circ, etc, etc.  But all of our decisions are based on a ton of research.  I also don't like taking any kind of medication, so I couldn't see taking medication for a totally normal body process."

  • Oh!  And this may be a reason you don't hear very often about going natural - history.  I'm a big history/genealogy/etc person.  For me, there's something very fulfilling about feeling like I'm connecting to my female ancestors and how they must have given birth.  I feel like I'm surrounded by civilization and technology constantly, so there's something really cool about getting to that "primitive brain."

And if you'd like, what are your religious/political leanings?

Believe in a god (not christian though), but am totally against organized religion of any kind.  Libertarian

We will be cloth diapering and I will mostly babywear.  I am partially for AP and partially against.  I will be delivering with an OB in a hospital (both are completely supportive of NB-I posted a while ago about how awesome they both are) and have no desire at all for a home birth.  I do recycle and drive a fuel efficient car but I mainly make all of these decisions because it saves us money! Helping the planet out is a bonus.

ETA: My decision to go completely med free except for a c section has to do with the scientific research out there showing the risks of the medications.  I am not comfortable with the risks to my baby, period and will not subject her to them.  It has nothing to do with me and my experience and everything to do with her.

Etc...my parents did natural birth, breastfeeding and cloth diapers back in the day, so I've just always thought that was normal. A lot of my friends (esp. from church) are the same way. Natural birth because we were made to give birth, breastmilk as the perfect baby food, and cloth diapers are easier on the wallet and earth. I think those are things that many people can agree on, despite religious and political differences.

Lesbian, in a relationshipHow many kids do you already have (if any)? one, natural birth as well almost 9 years agoWhat is your level of education? Bachelors in Special Education k-12What is your job (SAHM counts too!)? I own a behavioral health companyAnd if you'd like, what are your religious/political leanings? We are very open minded and liberal for Idaho, for other places we might be considered more conservative. Our family is very "crunchy", we fit the new age hippy stereotype in a completely over the top way.   It is a family thing, I was born in a house in the Bay Area with a MW and my family has an organic farm and bees.  My partner's family is from the country where her grandma delivered the family's babies and they conserve everything.  Our children's health, our health and our planet's health is always taken into consideration.  We stay as educated as we can and try to make the most responsible decisions as we can.  That being said I have one luxury, when not taking my bike or motorbike to get around town, I drive a fancy BMW.  I love my car and will have it forever, considering I only drive a few thousand miles a year I try not to feel to guilty.
