Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Coughing up for almost a week, gagging and can't catch his breath?

Sky has had this cough for almost a week now. Several times a day he'll cough hard enough that you can hear something coming up, he'll gag or choke on it and not breathe for a second, then regain his breath. I thought it would be gone by now and I'm booking him an emergency appointment because I want them to listen to his lungs. Anyone with a LO that's recently coughed like this? Was it anything to be worried about? Sky had his shots and everything, I think whooping cough is included. I'm worried because it's been waking him up at night and getting a bit worse.

Well, that's just it. Besides when it's happening, it doesn't seem to bother him at all. He's been himself, just a little cranky from teething and waking up extra. It just sounds and looks so horrible when he does it! Especially when he can't breathe for a couple of seconds and his face may or may not go pinky-red (which worries me.)
  • Could it be from him coughing up saliva? Does sound like it is productive? Some kids when they teeth/ have sinus infections it can sound like it is coming from the lungs, but it actually isn't. Any how Iam glad you are getting him checked out, and I hope he feels better soon!

Funny, he has been grabbing at his face and his nose runs clear off and on throughout the day. I thought it was a cold before but I'm sure it's not. I was thinking maybe seasonal allergies which may explain/= sinus problems. It does sound like it's coming from his lungs, but it could be saliva.
  • As silly as it sounds it may all be from teething.

  • Scary! Definantly get it checked out asap I am so scared of whooping cough going around right now and your description of the cough would worry me too.

  • That seems excessive - I'd definitely have your pedi check him out.  They can tell you if it sounds like he has fluid in his lungs or not.  Ds just got over his first cold and was super congested (although it was clear) and coughed for about 1-2 days as stuff was draining down.  And it wasn't a gagging cough, although it did make him throw up once.
