2nd Trimester

Reason for measuring large?

I know this question is a common one, but now that I'm in the boat I thought I would ask my fellow bumpies if they had any answer for me,

At my 16wk appt today my uterus is measuring 19cm, 3cms too large for 16 wks.  Dr ordered an ultrasound (I expected to have one done at 20 wks anyway) to make sure everything's ok.

I had an u/s done at 7wks and Dr confirmed my dates I had for LMP were right since the baby was measuring perfect for 7wks.  So if my EDD is still the same, why would my uterus be measuring large?  Big baby?  BTW I have only gained one pound this pregnancy and I still don't have real bump anyone would notice.

Re: Reason for measuring large?

  • I was gonna say twins bc that is what my MW suggested when I measured big, but I see you already had an u/s. Could be just a big baby, or lots of fluid?

  • It's probably nothing. Shape or tilt of your uterus, the way the baby is laying...that or your having a litter Wink

  • Those measurements rely alot on where baby is sitting and what position they're in. I take the u/s dates with a grain of salt. I know they're supposed to be super accurate but I chart and know when I conceived. I could see a few days difference but the tech told me she was measuring two weeks ahead and it's not physically possible for her to be that old.

  • Haha, I'm pretty sure it's not twins from the first u/s.  Just curious about what the reason could be...the doctor sort of floated in the room and floated right back out after measuring and listening to the HB...not a lot of chit chat.
  • I didn't think the fundal height measurement was really accurate this early--is that what your OB was measuring?

I wouldn't worry about it at this point--I think an u/s will be much more accurate this early.  I don't think my mw started measuring my uterus until 24-28 weeks.  I measured a couple of weeks behind my entire pregnancy, and my DD was 8 lbs when she was born.

  • Measurements are based on averages but our bodies and babies are different, plus things like different position, growth spurts, etc. My LO measured 5d behind for most of 1st tri on u/s. Now with fundal height he measures 2 weeks ahead. That said, I think fundal height is only valid after 24w and it has a margin of error of up to 3 cm.

  • From my research it seems like fundal height isn't really used until 20-24 weeks when it's more reliable, but my Dr seemed like it warranted an ultrasound to check it out.  I'm just happy for another ultrasound so it's all good to me!
  • I measured large the entire pg, but I had polyhydramnios (too much amniotic fluid)  I did end up having a large baby (9.9 lbs), but I think the fluid had more to do with my fundal height than the actual baby.
  • My doc said I was larger than normal and since twins run in my family she sent me for an u/s at 14 wks.  (That was my first u/s since my dr doesn't normally do u/s before 20 wks unless there's a reason.)  It wasn't twins, but one baby and a fibroid.  Apparently fibroids sometimes grow along with the baby so it's possible it didn't show on your first u/s but might show on the next one (if that's the case).  Don't stress yourself over it though - you could be large for a number of reasons.  Of course I was freaked out about it at first, but doc says fibroids are common and don't usually cause any problems.  They're just going to keep track of the size via u/s every 4-6 wks.  I have my next u/s on Monday - the Level 2 anatomy scan.  Hopefully everything will be fine!  And I hope all will turn out fine for you too!

  • I'm actually in the same boat--I'll be 14 weeks on Monday, and when I posted about this (my aunt is a former ob/gyn and when she felt my bump she measured and commented and looked confused b/c i was measuring 3 weeks larger) several ladies mentioned the same reasons (fibroids, large baby, fluid, and possibly twins)...i don't have my next appointment till wednesday so i'll find out what she says then...but you'll find out soon enough with the u/s.  and several women at work told me that its common to measure large, and they all had normal, single babies even though they thought they were having twins too!

good luck and keep us posted!
