Just got back from ER

Katelyn had a scary food allergy reaction, so we took her to the ER.  Her lip swelled up and it looked like a huge blister.  She broke out in hives, her eyes turned red and wouldn't stop watering.  She was itching herself like crazy.  She projectile vomited for 2 minutes.  Needless to say, it was scary as hell.  I am still in shock and so confused, upset, mad, etc.  Why can't my daughter just eat like everyone else??????????

  • Oh my gosh... I am so sorry :(

Do you know what caused it?

    Ugh... poor baby girl :(

  • Oh wow, I'm so sorry to hear about your scare tonight. I'm so thankful everything is okay. Do they know what could have provoked this latest attack. HUGS!
  • I *think* guacamole.  I was eating it and I let her lick it from my finger.  She loved it and kept begging for more.  So she had some more.  Ten minutes later, her lip was huge and she was vomiting.

Yes.  Ironically, I received the computer phone call to remind me of the appointment while we were at the ER.

Benadryl and a steroid shot.  I am to give benadryl every 6 hours for the next 24 hours.

  • I'm so sorry you have to go through this. You must have been so scared. I hope Katelyn feels better. Hugs to you for a stressful day.
  • I'm sorry that you guys are going through this.  I hope you get some answers soon.
  • Oh wow, that sounds so scary.

If it turns out she's allergic to avocado, so am I.  I guess the one good thing is that avocado will be much easier to avoid than some of her other allergies.  The only time it's really been an issue is when I was looking for a breast cream (for BFing).  Since I'm also allergic to lanolin, it was a little difficult to find a cream that didn't have either lanolin or avocado.  (Most creams don't have avocado, but a couple of the ones that didn't have lanolin did have avocado instead.)

Also, I know absolutely nothing about how allergies are tied to each other and I can't remember what else she's already tested positive for, but I'm also sensitive (although not technically allergic) to raw carrots.  I just thought I'd throw that out there in case there's some sort of relationship between avocado and carrot.

I hope you get lots of good information tomorrow!

  • Very scary! I am glad she is okay.  I had almost the same thing happen to me at prom my sophomore year.  They still don't know what caused mine but it wasn't food. It actually started the night before at a track meet and I got a double dose of steroids the following morning.  So I piled on the make up & wore my hair down because I was still covered in hives.  Later that night after dinner while at the dance I had to call my Mom because my lips swelled after drinking some punch and I was having trouble breathing.  I was admitted to the ER with anaphlyactic shock.  I have had hives since then but nothing like that night.  I was so hot to the touch but so cold and could not keep anything down.  Sorry you have to go through all of this with her.

  • Oh my goodness I"m so sorry!  That had to have been really scary.  Have they given you an epi pen since she is so allergic?  My sister had several anaphylactic episodes very young and my mom always carried one.  I hope you are able to get some answers tomorrow at your appointment and that she feels better.

  • oh wow.  i'm so sorry that must have been horrible to have to see her go through that. i'm glad she is better now and you *think* you know the source.

i'm not sure how you allergy moms do it.  at one point they were thinking evan might have celiac disease and i felt completely lost.  i'm not a cook at all so putting limitations on what i could cook threw me into a frenzy almost.

ask your doc about an epi pen in case something scary happens like that again.  or make sure you have benadryl with you at all times until you discover all of her allergies.

    take care!

  • Oh my gosh, that must have been so scary.

I hope both you and her start feeling better soon.
