Glucose Tolerance Test... with candy?

I received a letter from my doctor's office yesterday saying that they would like me to take an early gestational diabetes test (one hour glucose) at my next appointment.  That?s fine, I knew I had to take it early and often since I have PCOS.  However the instructions said to eat 1 and 1/2 regular size Milky Way bars 1 hour before the appointment.  I've never heard of this.  The two previous times I took this test I had to drink the nasty juice.  I figure they do this so I don't hang around the office for an hour but it?s still strange to me.  Of course my DH asked if he could take the test too b/c he wanted to eat the candy :)

Has anyone else eaten the sugar before going to the doctor to take the test?

  • God I wish I could have eaten a candy bar instead of drinking that nasty drink.  I haven't heard of that but heck I am mad that wasn't an option for me.

  • someone on 3rd tri mentioned a certain number of jelly bellies. It prob milkyway only becasue they know all the sugar counts and such.
  • Strange. I wish I could have had a candy bar v.s. the nasty orange drink.
  • Stranger yet at my office they watch you drink the juice and you have to do so within a certain time frame. With a candy bar it's not supervised, a half a candy bar really isn't super standardized (some people's halves may be more than others), and there's no time frame with which the bar has to be consummed. Interesting.
  • Oh there is a time frame.  The candy has to be eaten with 15 minutes.  And you have to record the time when you finish it.  Then you have to be at the doctors office w/in one hour so they can test exactly one hour after you have finished the candy.

  • How funny! I just heard about this the other night when speaking with a friend who is pg but sees a midwife.

She told her to eat 1 and 1/2 milky ways or 18 brach's jelly beans.

  • I wish i went to your Doctor, I have to drink the orange stuff next week and I am so not looking forward to it!  I love milky ways, maybe I'll call and see if I can do that instead!

  • Lucky!! At least you have lots of Milky Ways to look forward to instead of nasty orange drinks since you know you'll be tests often : )
