I have asked about my concerns with Rye and a possible milk allergy before. I asked his Dr at his 1 year check up, where I was told to watch him and see basically. No real concern yet, but maybe later blood work etc...
I thought I had pinpointed the possible allergy to whey. When he eats cottage cheese, or Mac and cheese he gets the rash on his chin and mouth area. Both have whey. Yogurt too, he gets the rash with kinds that have whey listed and no problems with go-gurt where no whey is listed as an ingriedient.
Milk sometimes gives him a rash, but not always. He has been doing better with it lately. Then tonight, he basically dumped an entire zippy of milk on his shirt (by letting it dribble out of his mouth down his chin soaking his shirt down to his belly button). A bit later, I noticed red splotches and took off his soaked shirt to find bright red welts with tiny white bumps all over his torso, in the exact pattern as the wet shirt. ( no welts where the shirt was dry). Worse than I have ever seen.
It's got to be something since this pattern keeps popping up! I'm going to call the Dr tomorrow, and I hope to get him in, but who knows. Those of you with milk allergies, what type of milk did you/ do you give to your LO's? Regular soy milk?
Re: Another milk allergy question..(Coreen, Caldwell..)
It could be from a fish allergy (which is likely more severe than milk, b/c it's so commonly anaphylactic), except that it happens for other dairy products. Unless he has multiple allergies...
I'm not allergic, but i am lactose intolerant, and for flavor i would rec rice milk (trader joes or rice dream, either unsweetened); i can't drink a glass of soy milk, any variety, but rice milk would be tolerable. A lot of people also have concerns about too much soy (isoflavins), but there are soy formulas that lots of people use, so who knows. You'll also need to take into account the nutritional supplementation, specifically for calcium if you are replacing milk as a drink.
I give Gavin plain organic soy milk.
Can you self-refer to an allergist? Will your insurance allow it? If so, see if you can get him allergy tested. At least you can get peace of mind if you know one way or the other.
Edit: One more thing--Gavin broke out in hives when Evie accidentally spilled milk on him. Big red welts everywhere the milk touched him. When I told the pedi about it, she immediately referred me to an allergist to have Gavin tested.
I think we got in within a week or so. They did the skin prick test, and they tested him for everything (not just milk). He's also allergic to egg, which was really good to know before we started solid food.
The pedi said that a skin reaction like the one Gavin had was an indicator of a severe allergy, and she wanted us to have him tested to see if we needed an epi pen for him. We ended up getting one (and thankfully have not had to use it yet!).
If it were me, I'd bring him back to the pedi again and tell her about the hives from the milk touching his skin. Really push for an referral. Even though we suspected the milk allergy already, I felt so much better once we had Gavin tested and I knew for sure. Plus it's nice having the epi pen on hand, just in case.
Sounds like what M had too, but he has since outgrown. We had him on regular soy milk, I didn't want him to get used to the flavored and he didn't have a problem drinking the regular. But he wouldn't drink my parents unsweetened. He also had to do soy yogurt and ice cream until he was 2.
C already gave great doctor advice, we never did an allergy test since once we pulled milk it didn't come up again. My advice is to take a picture next time, if it happens before your doctor appt. I did this with his 1st outbreak, which was nice since the benadryl kicked in before we were seen 2 hours later at the walkin.
